Hon. John D. Benedict
of Muskogee. J. T.
Col. Douglass the erudite editor
of the Phoenix has driven the last
nail In his political colli n and is
now as dead as h . It Is a
just retribution upon a worthy sub-
ject. Some of our boys say that the
Ilory Colonel was ono of the most
bitter cnomys that Cunoy had dur-
ing I he turbulent times In Texas.
This being truo wo don't wonder at
hip position here and his blttcrnosb
towards the negro.
Mr. Lannlng is the logical candi-
date for delegate from the 7Gth dis-
trict lie Is an able man a splen-
did Republican and will make a
clean campaign. lie is the man
that can beat Haskell a country
block. Thu boys In the trenches
and from the forks of the road are
foi him and is not that sufficient?
The negroes of the Indian Terrl-
lory are Republicans. They have
J not and do not dc3ire to dominate;
1 1 they do insist upon having a hand
In helping nominate men for olllcc
and they accept the challenge
( tproun down by the Illy whites dis-
i organizers ajul sny:
"Kay on MoDuff and dammed be
ho' who llrst cries Hold Enough!"
If Hon. N. G. Turk de3lres to win
I ho SOth district ho will have to con-
vince (ho boys in tho trenches that
I' Ms not running on tho Douglass"
! i la t form.
A Democrat is a shining angel by
i tho side of a Republican on a lily
white platform. The devils have
H mado tho la-iuo and wo will tight It
out with them on any grounds.
1 Every lellow must como out in tho
l
i open.
There is not a single man who
can bo elected on the Republican
ticket without the negro vote and
no decent negro will vote for any
scoundrel who desires to degrade
our wives and our daughters and
our boys. Wo want no social equal-
ity but we demand a square deal
for our boys and our girls.
Tho most treacherous and ven-
omous roptile that lives is not more
dangerous to our people than the
lily white Republican who though
frozen has been warmed into life
by the nogro. True to its snaklsh
nature turns upon its protector
and trios to sink Its polsolnoua
fangs Into the vitals of its friends.
Tho lily white Republicans (and
they are all lily whites who passed
that infernal contemptible foolish
prejudiced hellish damnable reso-
lution;) who as editors attempted
to commit the Republican party to
tholr hellish designs and suicidal
policy are not worthy of tho name
of Republicans and should take
the name of anarchists that Is more
fitting.
The regions of tho dammed are
so full of hypocrlts treacherous
cusses ungrateful curs political
degenerates and monstrsitlos such
as the prtended Republican editors
of which the lion tamer Douglass
i ; ono that their legs are sticking
out of the windows and the devil
will have to enlarge tho hellish re-
gions if the territory outfit contin-
ues to grow.
which they have done.
It is reported that Douglass and
his gang will mix things in tho 75th
district so as to permit political
traitors pirates and HI ywhites to
control the convention. This Is all
wrong and wo warn the plotters
that the rank and tile will not stand
for thievery but will demand a
"square deal" and by the eternal
Gods wo will have it no matter
what the schemers and disorganiz-
es may do.
A few years ago tho negroes of
Muskogee elected C. B. Douglas
chairman of the Muskogee Republi-
can club and when ono of their own
number was a candidate and at a
time when tho Colonel was an un-
known and did not have his present
backing. Did this seem like negro
domination? And does It not look
like base ingrntltude when thlp
same man breaks forth In a tirade
cussing and damming the men who
were his friends? Tn our opinion
there Is no greater crime than that
of ingratitude and the Colonel as
we see it is guilty of base ingratitude.
Douglas and the balance of the
disfranchising gang are as dange-
rous to tho success of the Republi-
can party as the fires of hell to a
magazine of powder. They practi-
cally say to tho negro "You can
and you can't; you will and you
won't: you will be darned if you
do and dammed If you don't."
The darkest of the night Is just
before tho dawn. So It Is In tho
life of the negro. When It seems
that there Is no hope that all Is
lost ma i tno worst lias come.
Let us acquit ourselves like men
and never give up the light but con-
! tlnuo to battle for justice and right
j and in tho end victory will crown
our efforts.
To tho lily white editors wo say
fro ma political point:
"If you sot still wo chop you
wld a razor if you runs -wes hoot
do tofi of your head off."
Xo docout white Republican subs-Tiber
to tho platform as laid
('own by Douglass and his gang and
robody but a o fool will run on
that platform.
Tho Douglas.! candidate upon tho
Douglass platform cannot bo nomi-
nated In tho 7 Btli or tho 7flth dis-
trict. Douglass and his band of
1 olitical bucoanoors shall not closo
tl'o door of hope against the ne-
groes In this territory. Wo will
light thorn until holl freezes over
and whonover ono of thorn pokos
up his head wo will have an axo
ready to chop it off.
Whilo In Colorado Springs Col.
we had the pleasure of listening to
tho music rondcred by the splen-
did choir of the A. M. E. church
upon more- occasions than one and
nla.o to tho expert renditions of se-
ctions by that queen of elocution-
ists Mlts h. C. Lo Reauf. All of
which makes a green spot in tho
memory of tho Oklahoma delega-
tion and especially the Indian Ter-
ritory portion thereof to-wit:
Gordon et al.
Wo aro of tho opinion that Jones
has been assassinated in tho house
of his friends and that tho follows
who protondod to bo his supportors
wo moan tho loud-mouthod blatant
stroet demagogues who aro talking
If the nogro had desired to dom-
inate as Douglass and his gang say
then Douglass would not havo tho
city printing. Tho negroes are tho
cause of his having the printing and
ho repays them by doing his very
level best to degrado them and rob
thorn ol their rights. Like a snnko
he turns to striko the hand that
saved him.
Dougliiss nor any of his gang of
traitors have any right to outer a
Republican convention. Thoy aro
disorganizes of tho worst kind and
their tactics moan that o shall
rule or will run tho party and such
pretended Republicans aro not worth
their room In h and It Is woll
that they commit suicide now
We are proud of tho records our
boys have made in the nrious wars
in which the honor of our flag was
at stake. They have always been
"last ditch fighters." They die in
tho ditch; they never have turned
their backs to the foe. In our po-
litical battles in the New State of
Oklahoma our boys are keeping up
the record. They are last ditch
fighters. No man can ever' accuse
them of Ingratitude; they will stay
on the firing lino; they will always
face tho enemy and If defeat comes
It will find them dying like men
with their face to the enemy and
with tho trumpeter at all times
sounding the call of advance. In
this groat state of which the foun-
dation Is now being laid our boys
are making tho fight for justice and
right and they aro ably supported
by all men who believe in a "square
deal." It is the last place on Ameri-
can soil where tho fight can bo made
and right gallantly Is tho fight be-
ing made by our boys who love
truth and justice. Thoy know that
the eyes of tho world aro upon them
and thoir lovo of home and country
ppurs them on to do thoir duty as
God gives power to see it.
It Is not lovo of otllco or desire
for personal gain that actuates our
boys in this contest; thoy are will-
ing to lay all upon tho Party's al-
ter for tho Party's good but thoy
demand from our party an equal
chance In life and that the "door of
hope bo not closed against tho
back bone and sinow of tho Repub;
llcan party in the New State."
HOLDEX'S PROTEST.
Muskogee I. T. Sept. 25. At
tho Republican Editorial conven-
tion for tho Third Congressional
district held in Muskogee yester-
day where ten Republican editors
wore in attendance the proceedings
of which appeared in this morning's
Phoenix resolutions wore ndopted
declaring nginst nogro rights in
certain things which the Phoenix
article calls "Negro Domination"
etc. It was stated that the "reso-
tlons were adopted with but one
dissenting vote" name not given.
I opposed the resolutions in Hint
part and it was understood that my
name should go on record as such
which was not done so I take this
method of informing tho public how
I stand on this matter. Part of tho
resolutions read as follows:
"Whereas tho Republican party
has discharged its obligations to
tho nogro in that It glve3 him full
rights equal with every other citi-
zen and still stands for that pol-
icy." I endorse the above but not tho
following which appears further on
I r. these resolutions which reads:
"That it is opposed and will use
every means at its command to pre-
vent tho nomination of negroes on
any elective ticket seeking the suf-
frage of the other races."
It may be seen at a glance by
any person of ordinary intelligence
that there i's a fiat contradiction be-
tween these two declarations. If
the Republicans have given the ne-
groes "full civil rights equal to
ovoryo tiior citizen and still stands
for that policy" how can any con-
sistont Republican "use every
means at his command to prevent
the nomination of negroes on nny
elective ticket seeking the suf-
frage of other races?"
With all due respect for Brother
Editors who voted for these resolu-
tions to be consistent with my past
record I must dissent from the
same "with charity for all malice
towards none firmness in the
right."
J. S. IIOLDEN.
The above shows where that
Grand Old Man J. S. Holden stands.
We knew that a man who had stod
for justice and right when it was
popular to be tho other way could
not and would not betray hist rust
ai.d turn his back upon a life time
record at the bidding of a few lily
whites and trickery sycophants who
sell their birthright for a mess of
potage.
