The Corn Crop.
I novor realized the importnnco oi
the corn crop to the United States till
I started to study up tho statistics ol
corn growing. I was under the impres-
sion that it was grown on but a limit
ed area and that there were many
states in which corn was not grown at
all except a little sweet corn ror the
family. My surprise was great to And
that corn Is grown in every state in
There are over flvo million farms in
tho United States and corn Is grown
on 85 per cent of them. That leaves
only 15 per cent of the farms without
com and many of Ihose are fruit
farms chicken farms stock farms and
ranches. I think a cron that is so ex
tensively grown is well worthy all tho
attention that Is given it by the agri-
cultural colleges and farmers' insti-
tutes. I used to wonder why at tho farm-
ers' institutes tho speakers did not
pay more attention to the growing of
other crops such as beans turnips
carrots green peas and tho llko. I
asked a professor why thoy did not
havo moro variety In their programs
and ho replied that tho first work of
the stations was to teach tho farmers
how to grow corn potatoes and tho
few leading crops which aro of so
I realize tho truth of that now.
Especially so when I consider further
that tho live great states in this little
western country produce half of tho
corn grown in the United States. If
any peoplo ever studied corn wo
should study it and I proposo to do
After all I begin to seo that wo can
get rich selling corn and still keep up
the fertility of our farms if wo go at
tho matter right. Tho starch in tho
kernel of tho corn is only the carbon
caught by the leaves from tho air. Wo
aro thus selling only air so far as tho
starchy matter is concerned and that
is a largo part of tho wholo crop for
it also comprises most of tho fiber in
tho stalk. It may bo difllcult to keep
up tho fertility of our land In raising
wheat but not in raising corn and if
wo don't learn how to bojh raise corn
and Improve our land It seems to mo
wo aro stupid.
I am moro of an enthusiast in corn
growing than over but I realizo that
we have got to cut looso from somo of
tho out-of-dato methods wo havo been
following. Hero Is for moro study on
the problem of corn raising.

High Priced Corn.
After an exhibit of corn at tho Iowa
Agricultural College tho premium cars
were put up at auction. Tho oar of
corn that won first prize sold for $11;
100 cars that won a $2000 promium
sold for nn aggregato of $102. Ono
breeder that had forty earn of corn
on exhibition bid them back at $35;
anothor man paid $13 for ten ears
whllo anothor ton ears sold for $12.
One collection of twenty ears brought
24. Tho third best singlo ear was
sold to tho man that exhibited It
for $2.50. Tho grain will bo used for
Sawdust in Manure.
Will sawdust injure manuro? I am
spending it on alfalfa three years old.
W. H. Carter Josephine Co. Oro.
No. Tho amount of manuro how-
over should bo greater than that of
sawdust. Since it Is slow to decay it
affords after discharging its absorbed
fertility an oxcollent mulch for deop
rooted grass crops. Much In experi-
ence goes to show that excessive
quantities applied especially to clay
Boils will produce an undesirablo acidity.
A Ctazy Expression
In a contest over tho will of tho Into
J. Alexander Yoell a shrewd but ex-
citable business man of San Jose
Cal. ono of the facts cited as pi oof of
his unsoundness of mind was that In
a dispute with Hob Kltzsimmons at a
hotel over the use of a bathtub when
tho pugilist said to him: "If you
were not so small I would break every
bone in your body" ho replied: "Try
it; you will get the worst of it."
An Interesting cave has just been
discovered on the allotment of Nancy
Fntubby a fullblood Choctaw living
near Antlers. It Is about four miles
southwest of Davis on what is known
as Wild Horse creek. Those who
have visited this cave claim that It
seems to widen out into large under-
ground river which flows rapidly.
They say It can bo traversed 300
yards without difficulty but from
there on for a quarter of a mile it is
a difllcult task. Notches are cut in
the wall and Indians living in tho vi-
cinity claim that the cave was once
inhabited by robbers.

No Doctor Bills
Swedish doctors never send bills to
their patients. Each patient pay? what
ho dooms just or is able to give. Tho
rich pay the physician liberally
whether they havo need of his ser-
vices or not if lie has been only re-
tained by them. Tho poor If they
possibly can pay him a small sum
and the very poor pay him nothing.
Yet he attends the poor as faithfully
as ho docs the rich.
