THE INDIAN ADVOCATE 235
The union of Christ and His Church lasts until the end
of time. Christ has established His Church that it may teach
His doctrine to mankind' until the consummation of the
world. No power on earth can separate the union of Christ
and His Church.
Therefore if the union of man and woman husband and
wife is symbolized with the union of Jesus Christ and His
Church it must be a union lasting until the end of time.
It must be a union which no power on earth can destroy.
It must be a union of perfect holiness of perfect love for
Christ loves His Church. He loves it as a divine instru-
ment. So likewise the husband and wife should love
each other and for that purpose do they receive the sacra-
ment. Now as divorce is one of the results of matrimony it is
especially interesting that we should have correct ideas as
to whether or not it is allowed. Is it true that a valid
Christian marriage is indissoluble cannot be broken can
never be broken; or is it true that the severance of a valid
Christian marriage can be had and that the privilege of
remarriage can be given? That is an important question
both morally and socially:
Morally because if there may be no such a thing as di-
vorce then the entering upon a new marriage tie is a sin.
Socially because if divorce be allowed as we know it
to be destructive of society and family it is something
that we should put out of the lives of our people and we
see that to-day there is an effort on the part of non-Catholic
churches in their annual assemblies and conferences to
pass stricter laws concerning the allowing of divorces and
the privilege of re-marriage. We find that the State is
also beginning to realize the evils of divorce and that it is
holding conferences whereby certain laws shall be made
uniform over the country and this evil shall be at least
limited as to its extent. Is therefore the position of the
Catholic Church the true biblical position? Or is divorce
with the right to re-marry allowed by Christ? The Catholic
Church says there is no such thing as divorce from a va-
lid consummative Christian marriage and entering upon
