N a little cabin sat an old woman upon whose
venerable head the snowflakes of age had left
their indelible marks. In her hands she held
a book from which she seemed to be reading.
Near her played a child from whose face shone
the brilliant rays of innocence and love. The
head was covered with heavy locks of beautiful
golden curls and the large blue eyes bespoke
an unusual intelligence. That child's name was Pauline.
" Grandmother" said Pauline "is Santa Claus going
to visit us this year?"
"I hope so dear child" answered grandmother with a
tear in her eye. "He always comes to those who try to'
"Then he will come tomorrow will he not? I will hang
my stockings near the door so that dear Santa Claus will
be sure to find them. "-
Grandmother did not reply. She could not. Strong
inward emotions forbade her to answer. She wiped a tear
from her face as she kissed little Pauline. The memory

lastly after living several years in wedded infelicity died

what had ever become of him. Thus grandmother and
little Pauline were in the world alone and forsaken. But
