carried out at once and for that purpose published the fol-
lowing Motu-Proprio decree.
LEO X11I. POPE.
There having been made known to us the desire of the government
of the French Republic to confide to the J-tenedictine monks of the
primitive observance the care of the Sanctuary of Abougosch and the
land annexed thereto situated on the road between Jerusalem and
Jaffa We considering the not small help the sons of the Patriarch
Saint Penedict can bring to the Christians of tie Orient both by ex-
ample and exercise of the Sacred Functions and also by the encourage-
ment of studies according to their Institute We have come to the
determination to authorize as we do authorize the Superiors of the
Benedictine Congregation of the primitive observance to take posession
of the aforesaid Sanctuary of Abougosch and to establish there a com-
munity of Benedictines to attend there to the divine service and to
promote there the studies and the greatest good possible for the
benelit of the Christians of the Orient. This we declare and ordain
notwithstanding any other disposition to the contrary which we ex.
plicitly want to put out of force giving this our Motu-Proprio the
force of all necessary clauses.
Given from Our Apostolic Palace of the Vatican on the 14th day
of November 1899 the XXII. year of Our Pontificate.
Leo PP. X UI.
Abougosch is as said in the decree on the road be-
tween Jaffa and Jerusalem but nearer to the latter city; near
there was the ancient village of Cariathiarim where the holy
ark rested for the space of twenty years. The old church
at one time belonging to the Franciscan Fathers who in
1489 were all barbarously put to death and now belonging
to the French government which keeps two chaplains there
is the one given over to the Benedictines.
Two French monks were sent to the Holy City to take
formal possession of the said Sanctuary in the name of the
Superior of the Congregation They are Father D Theo-
dor Andrieu and Father D.Bernard Dronhin. II Sacro
Speco. N. 10. iSqq.
