THE CIGARETTE NUISANCE
Tho consumption of cigarettes in 1010
reached the highest mark over record-
ed. The tremendous increase more
than -10 per cent over 101.1 is attributed
to two main causes:
Increased prosperity of the country
and growth of tho cigarette habit
among woman Many millions of cigar-
ettes made for feminine users wore
produced in this country and Imported
the past year whereas a few years ago
production and importation of such
cigarettes were negligible by compari-
son with last year.
The number of cigarettes on which
the government levied a tax during
the year 101Q reached the grand total
of 2.r2320OO0L'8 as compared with
17039231208 In 1915.
Hern wo see an increase of over
eight billion cigarettes consumed in
one year. And the beautiful and ele
gant part of the story is thai women
and girls smoked .the increase. How
beautiful the spectacle of a blooming
young girl or woman with a cigarette
between her ruby lips and using her
nose for a chimney! There is nothing
more attractive unless it is a voung
mau say from eight to twenty years
old with a cigarette hanging out of
one corner of his mouth and slobbers
running nut of the other ornsr! No
wonder we are too proud to fight
