For each station the chart shows
a series of vertical columns shaded
in different ways. Tho number of col

of different groups of wheat grown In
thoso years. Knch column stands for
tho best variety of Its group and tho
height shows tho yield In busliols per

things very plainly. Hero they aro:

A NATIONAL CALAMITY.
"I havo belloved In tho regulation
not the prohibition of tho liquor traf-
fic" says Dr. Lyman Abbott "but tho
action of liquor dcnlcrs has mad
regulation Impossible"
Tho secretary of tho Ohio Temper
nnco Union (a liquor organization)
wroto to Doctor Abbott asking for a
letter which could bo used In tho stato
prohibition campaign. Doubtless he
Is sorry ho did It. Tho reply camo as
an open letter In tho Outlook and Is
a sevens arraignment of tho saloon as
n Jawbreaker. Its law-dcflng pro-
pensities have in tho judgment ol
Doctor Abbott been Its undoing. Wo
quote:
"Tho American people aro charac-
teristically conservative and slow In
coming to a conclusion. But they aro
coming to tho conclusion though
slowly that tho American saloon Is
not only a local nulsanco but a na-
tional calamity and uro resolving to
abolish It.
"Tho question Is not la beer a use-
ful nrtlclo of food?
"It Is not Is modcrato drinking
wrong?
"it Is not Docs the Blblo prohibit
or permit moderate drinking?
"Theso questions tho pcoplo would
prefer to lcavo each individual free
to determlno for himself.
"But they am not wilting to leavo
each Individual to determlno for him-
self whether tho laws enacted by the
community Bhall bo oboyed. That
question tho community will decide
nnd It will suffer any Inconvenience
nny deprivation which may bo neces-
sary to securo such obedience This
Is tho meaning of tho present prohibi-
tory movement. . . .
"But it tho people are compelled to
cliooso between an unregulated and
lawless liquor trafllc and tho prohibi-
tion of the liquor trafllc I do not
doubt that they will cliooso prohibi-
tion. It wo cannot reform the saloons
wo shall abolish them. And If we can
find 'no other way to abolish them wo
shall abolish the distillery the brow-
cry the winery and tho Importation
of liquor from abroad."
SALOON AND LABOR PROBLEM.
We make no claim that a closed
saloon will scttlo the labor problem;
we do not bellevo It will. Wo do affirm
that there never will bo found a solu-
tion for tho labor problem that Ignores
tli6 saloon and allows It to continue
whether run by tho Individual or by
Uio brewer for profit or run by the gov-
ernment without profit. Labor cannot
enrry 200.00Q rum shops on its back
and prosper under any system.
Tho kingdom of labor will not havo
como when tho door of-tho saloon Is
shut; thcro will still bo Industrial
wrongs to right and other economic
problems to solve; but tho largest sin-
glo Immedlato contribution toward
that consummation the swiftest relief
that can bo applied is the abolition of
tho liquor traffic in tho United States.
It Id the one thing that as the barrier
to all other reform must bo removed.
To every Bon of toll who is ground
beneath tho millstones nt low wages
and high cost of living wo havo but
ono message. "In tho name of God and
homo and nattvo land rlso up and voto
for prohibition." Clinton Howard.
ALCOHOL AND TUBERCULOSIS.
Tho following resolution was passed
by tho International Congress on Tu-
berculosis held in Pads at which
Bonio 2000 medical scientists wcro
present: "That in view of the closo
connection between alcoholism and
tuberculosis this congress strongly
emphasizes the importance of combin-
ing tho fight against tuberculosis with
tho struggle against alcoholism."
At tho International Alcohol Con-
gress at Bremen ProfeBsor Spgran a
distinguished Frenchman said that
the uso of alcohol predisposes tho
system to tuberculosis and also pro-
vents cures. Tho real Individual nud
social treatment for tuberculosis con-
sists in tho strictest total abstlncnco
from alcoholic liquors.
OBJECTS TO LIQUOR DEALER.
My objection to tho liquor 'dealer Is
the same as my objection to the bed-
bug For all I know tho bedbug may
bo entirely abovo reproach so far as
his social relations are concerned. He
may be regular In his religious duties
gentle in his homo and prompt in pay-
ing his bills. Ho may bo frugal end in-
dustrious and blameless In every civic
duty and domestic obligation. He may
bo kind to his wife and children
obliging to his neighbors generous to
tho outcast nnd worthy of tho voto ot
his congressional district. But my ob-
jection to him Is tho way ho gets lUs
living. T Alexander Calms.

Alcohol puts to sloep tho senttnols

Policy holders aro warned against ad-
vertisements extolling tho vlrturs of

of such advertisements lies In tto fact
that they appeal to tho ver pooplo

chronic kidney disease nervous sub-

Pays to Advertise.
Churches In Now York realize the
great advantages of advertising and
besides using tho columns ot tho dally
papers In their soul saving work and
electric signs and crosses on their edi-
fices they send out solicitors men nnd
women to help- swell their congrega-
tions and enlarge their Sunday schools.
11 lit tho most daring church "ad" Is
that of Hov. Dr. Fred Wlnslow
Adams pastor of St. Andrew's Metho-
dist Kplscopnl church. He decided to
deliver a series ot sermons on "Love
Stories From the Blblo" for which ho
had an artist draw a fetching poster
of two lovers when tho moon drops
low. Thousands ot copies in blues
browns nnd orango tints were distrib-
uted and In addition tho pictures were
printed In tho newspapers as "paid
matter." Slnco tho minister began to
exploit tho "Love Stories" his congre-
gations hayo more than doubled.
Which again demonstrates that It pays
to advertise.
