tory in Behalf of Settlers.
Tho Secretary of the Interior under
date of Aug. 7th In a letter addressed
lo tho Commissioner of the Gcnoral
Land Office rendered a decision of
rpeclal interest lo hundreds of home
stead settlers In Qklahoma and to
thousands of worthy settlers through
nut tho west. Tho decision is a direct
result of tho efforts of Congressman
Dick T. Morgan. Tho dlflculty nroto
over tho proper construction of Sjcctrou
3201 of the U S. revised statutes which
provides that "no certificate (final
proof receipt) ihall bo given until the
expiration of flvo years from tho date
of such entry " Many ycara ago the
Secretary of tho Interior held that a
person who secured tho cancellation nf
nn abandoned entry and afterward en-
tered the land might have credit for
tho tlmo ho resided thereon prior to
cancellation of tho abandoned entry.
On September 21 1010 tho Secretary
reversed said ruling and held that set
tlers could not bo allowed 'uredit for
any residence upon land during the
tlmo tho land was covered by a former
entry.
Congressman Morgan was appealed
to by settlors in his district to senuro
n modification of tho ruling. Mr. Mor-
gan took the matter up with tho De-
partment of tho Interior Insisting that
in equity and justico tho now ruling
should not apply to settlers who had
maintained residence on land covered
by an entry while tho old rulo was in
force. IIo addressed numerous letters
to tho Secretary relatlvo thoroto ono
uf which dated I July II 1011. contained
a long legal brief in behalf ot the Bet-
tlcrs. IIo also mado several porsonnl
presentations of tho case and In addi-
tion thcroto Introduced a bill in Con-
gress to afford hho necessary relief.
As a tlnal result of Ida efforts tho order
was tnodlllcd as shown by tho following

meeting on tho North Flats Saturday
and Sunday.

Mrs Nina wifo of Chancy Bishop is
with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Hen-
son near Marengo.
No doubt the basket dinner and all-
day meeting near Hidgeway school
house was a grand success but the writ-
er did not get to go. While ho was
dressing his horso got out consequent-
ly he abfcntcd himself A 7 mllo wall-
was most too far.
Jess Garrard's houso was socompletly
down under tho hill it looked llko a
good sized chicken coop but now
since he has moved it up on an elevat-
ed plateau It looks like a mansion
which It is.
The basket dinner and all-day church
services that was to bo hold at Hidge
way school house was held about '1

week past all in Beaver county with-
out irrigation.

prised when tho nows was circulated
that Miss Edith Gidley and Mr. Mur-
ray Townsand wore married. If it had
happened a year ago It would have
been no surprise but this goes to prove
that although gone ho was not forgot-
ten. They have tho best wishes ot
their many friends hero for their fu-
ture happiness.
On July 31st tho Death Angel sum
moned little Cecil Holton from this
world of suffering to Join tho Angel
Band where ho will have no more suf
fering.
Little Cecil came the 20th of March
to brighten tho homo of Mr. and Mrs
Myron Holton. Ills short life wat ono
of suffering. All that loving 'parents
could do was done for him. Dear Papa

Canning and Preserving-
Keep This for Reference.
The success of canning depends upon
absolute sterilization and heating tho
fruit until all the germs aro destroyed.
then scaling it airtight whilo scalding
hot.
For canning use one-third to one-
half as much sugar as fruit.
For preserving use threo-fourths as
much sugar as fruit.
tor jam use equal amount oi sugar
and fruit.
tor jolly use equal amount ot sugar
and julco.
For canning use only perfectly sound
fruit fresh firm nnd of good quality
bar preserving fruit is uoth cut up
and lc ft whole.
For Jam imperfect or overripe fruit
may be used.
For Jelly fruit should bo underripe
Cook small quantities at a tlmo.
Havo tho fruit boiling hot when put
into tho jars.
Fruits in a hot dry season require
less sugar than in a cool damp season
To keep quinces pears and apples
from turning dark after they are pared
drop them in cold water containing
lemon juice
Plums and peaches can be easily and
quickly peeled if thoy are immersed in
boiling water for a few nilnutes.
It tho plums aro cooked with tho
skins on prick them thoroughly to
prevent bursting.
To the juice-that remains in canning
fruit add tho juico of a lemon and the
whlto of an egg and 'freeze. It makes
a delicious ice this hot weather.
Comblno quince with Apple.- Many
fruits can be bettered by judicious use
ot other fruits.
The flavor ot peaches is Improved if
a few pits are left iu each can.
Discoveries in Jelly Making. The
cause ot crystalizing In jelly is either
toomuch sugar or too rapid boiling.
Apple jelly flavored with mint is de
licious to servo with lamb.
Juico for jelly should not be stirred
whilo cooking
Fruit for jelly should not be gather-
ed just altera rain.
Too long boiling changes sugar to
glucose and turns tho mixture into a
syrup which will not jell.
The sugar should always bo hot when
added to the juice.
Overcooking causes a strong dUo-
greeablu taste
Always leave tho skin on large fruits
for jelly making.
Blueberry Jolly. The julco from
blueberries will Jell If the larger por-
tion of tho berries are green but a
much better jelly tan bo mado from
ripo berries. To cacli pint of julco add
I'.! teaspoons of tartaric acid.
Three-fourths as much sugar as juico
makes a delicious dark colored Jelly.
Tartaric acid is tho Bold of grapes
and can be purchased at any drug
store. Tho use of tartaric acid makes
possible entirely new jellies and is
also useful when the fruit U overripe.
