ONE of the saddest things In life
perhaps Is tho sight of nn
American tourist In West-
minster abbey. Unconvention-
al as ho may bo in n thousand
things the American Is tho mou con-
ventional of mortals In his attitude to-
ward the historic show places of Eu-
rope. Thero Is but ono proper way to
view a monument ono pioper opinion
to express In regard to It. This is de-
termined by tradition and In tho caso
of thoabbey tho Washington Irving
tradllton is tho ono that must bo re-
garded. A hundred years ago Irving
established a residence within tho
wall of tho old minster and pro-
ceeded to wrlto somo very charming
nlbclt a Httlo florid prose regarding
Its nrchltccturo and "Its memorials.
His expressed feeling toward It was
otto of roverenco and nwo and melan-
choly of admiration and respect. Now
this was both correct nnd nntural In
Irvlng's time but that was beforo the
day when visitors crowded tho aisles
liko cattlo at tho herding when tho
walla wore placarded with Instructions
nnd warnings even ns tho motor
busses that pass the door aro placard-
ed with advertisements nnd beforo
youthful vergers lined up tho curious
in companies' and collected a slxpenco
ppleco for personally conducting them
through tho royal chapels. Tho at-
mosphero today Indeed Is not conduc-
ive to meditation and reverentinl ec-
stasy; tho abbey la as much a show
placo as the Albert Memorial or Earl's
Court and tho sad sight referred to
abovo is that of tho hurried bustling
tourists of tho twentieth century try-
ing to adapt themselves to tho tradi-
tional pose of reveronco nnd nwo cre-
ated by Irving 'trying and not suc-
ceeding. Women In the Minister.
Tho sugestlon that Florenco Night-
ingale bo accorded the highest honor
known to an Englishman that of
burial In tho abbey caused me to res-
urrect from tho scrap pllo an old
guide to tho building written in a tone
that Irving hlmsolf would havo ap
proved. 1 wanted to find what women
havo heretofore been granted this
distinction or that of a tablet or mon-
ument In this national place of sepul-
ture and tho reasons therefor. I dis-
covered that their namo was legion
but that tho honor given them except
In two or tbrco cases was for no spe-
cial merit of their bwn. Their bodies
. rested thero or tho monument was
raised to thorn because they were tho
wives or daughters of this dignitary
or that ono taking the room for no
more valid reason than that sho was
the spouso of an estimable gentlomnn
who was for a time organist of tho
church Two exceptions thero wore
Indeed the one Jenny Llnd tho oth-
er Snrah Slddons. nut their tablets
ore of small comparative size and
value while to this or that lady of the
court has been erected an imposing
"nnd colossal monument. Ono all vis-
itors to the abbey will remember "be-
cause of the hideous skeleton that
forms part of Its composition erected
as It happens to the lady us. well ns
the lord of tho same name as tho he-
roic Suttta Flloutent who has Just
passed away.
Was an Age of Stilted Periods.
The epitaphs quoted In the guide-
book huve n distinctive flavor ns If
they were eomo special brand manu-
factured for tho abbey. Tho old kings
in tho splendid old tombs need no in-
scription nnd havo none but ns the
architectural merit of tho tombs de-
creases so does the verbal decoration
Increase and with tho monstrous
sculpture of tho eighteenth century
comes tho florid and overwrought pe
riods of the cpltnph writers. You can
almost tell tho date of any Individual
specimen by the literary style. His-
tory records I bellove that the mor-
als of tho eighteenth century were
anything but above reproach In Eng-
land but if Westminster Is to be ta-
ken ns tho test that was an ago of he-
roic saints and saintly heroes. Yet
that these quaint old hypocrites woro
not self-deceived is suggested by tho
closing sentence of one of tho epi-
taphs of n prlod following that of tho
most stilted specimen. "Render" It
says "If on perusing this trlbuto tr
a private Individual thou should bo
disposed to suspect It as partial or
consuro It as diffuse know that It Is
not panegyric but history."
True Sentiment Not Wanting.
Upon tho monument of Grace Scott
wife of Colonel Scott a member of
the honorable house of commons 1844
nro engraved these words:
"He that will glvo my Graco but what
is hers
Must say that death has not
Mado ouly her dear Scott
But virtue worth and sweetness wid-
owers." Punning indeed was highly es-
teemed by tho ancient eulogists as in-
stanced in tho epitaph to Sir James
Fullerton: "Ho died fuller of faith
than of fear: fuller of consolation than
of pains; fuller of honor than of
days." Yet there aro not wanting
specimens of true and Ingenious sen-
timent ns that in tho case of Mrs.
Mary Kendall whoso friendship for
Lady Catherlno Jones was such that
"sho desired that oven their ashes
after death might not bo divided nnd
therefore ordered herself here to bo
lntorred whero sho knew that excel-
lent lady designed ono day to rest
near tho grave of hor beloved nnd re-
ligious mother" nnd also the Httlo
marble cradle over tho grave of tho
daughter of James I. who died at tho
ago of threo days with verses by
Susan Cooltdgo which do not wholly
lose their pathos In splto of tho fact
that they aro placarded on tho walls
with tho "Keep Ordor" and other
signs.
When Abbey Becomes Impressive.
And moreover thero are times when
tho abbey does regain somo of the
majesty and nwe that tho early
writers tell of of a Into afternoon
perhaps when the sight-seeing mob
has gono and tho light has grown dim
and a faint but iinpresstvo radiance
falls from tho big roso window In the
south transept. Then having cllmbod
to tho little gallery wljeroln tho effi-
gies aro displayed not to seo those
abominations but to gain therefrom
charming and varied vistas of nave
and pillar of arches so slender thnt
thoy seem to sway and vaulting traced
with delicate designs having got
above the nolso of shuffling feet anrt
tho clottcr pf light-hearted tourists
you hear In tho dimness and silence
the lmpreaslvo strains of the Largo
from the fingers of a belated organist
and find a raro and appropriate har-
mony In the music tho light and tho
spirit ot the place. And you walk out
reverently thinking that the abbey In
after all still worth while.
ATCHISON'S ORDER OF SPINS
Unmarried) and Contented Withal
They Have Mapped Out for
Themselves a Pious City
There was called a meeting; of tho

happy now there was a sad time com-
ing. "Think of tho day" sbo said
"when having no husbands or cbll-
dren you will bo all alone." Thero
was a sniff and then a snort aB Spin
after Spin recalled wlxes and mothers
who aro alono from daylight till dark
except when somo member of tho fam-

nnd snorting Increased In volumo ns
Spin after Spin told of her freedom
from worry her Independence In fi-
nancial matters and tho joy of doing
ns sho pleased. "Dut wo must not
tako offonso at what our sister has
fcald" ono 'Spin romnrked. "Let us
show our good Intentions by calling
on every lonesome wlfo nnd mother

and though tho Spins have devoted
overy afternoon nnd evening Blnco to
this missionary work they haven't
made half tho rounds yet. Atchison

BABY'S SKIN TORTURE
"When our baby was seven weeks
old ho broko out with what wo
thought was heat but which gradually
grow worso. Wo called In a doctor.
Ho said it was eczema nnd from that
time wo doctored six months with
three of the best doctors in Atchison
but ho only got worso. His face head
and hnnds w.ero a solid sore. There
was no end to tho suffering for him.
We had to tlo his Httlo hands to
keep him from scratching. Ho never
knew what It was to sleep well from
tho tlmo ho took the disease until he
was cured. Ho kept us nwako nil
hours of tho night nnd his health
wasn't what you would call good. Wo
tried everything but tho right thing.
"Finally I got a set of tho Cutlcura
Remedies and I am pleased to say
we did not uso nil of them until ho
was cured. Wo havo waited n year
and a half to see If It would return
but It never has and to-day his skin
is clear nnd fair as It possibly could
be. I hope Cutlcura may save somo
ono else's Httlo ones suffering and
also their pocket-books. John Lenson

Woman's Power
Over Man
Woman's most dlonoui endowment is the power
to awoken and hold the pure and honest lovo of a
worthy man. When the loses it and still loves on
no ono in the wido world can know the heart agony
she ensures. The woman who suffers from wak
ness and derangement of her special womanly or
danism soott loses tho power to sway tho heart of
o man. Her general health suffers and sho loses
her fjood looks her attractiveness her amiability
and her power nnd prcstirle as a woman. Dr. R.V. Pierce of Duflalo N.Y. with
tho assistance) of his staff of able physicians has prescribed for and cured many
thousands of womcr. Ho has devised a successful remedy for woman's ail-
ments. It is known as Dr. Pierce's Pavorito Prescription. It Is a positive
specific for tho weaknesses and disorders peculiar to women. It purifies regu-
