QUEEN llt-ES WORTH $200 EACH
Some of the Italian Insects Are Ex-
tremely Valuable.
Just as thcro nro valuable strains
n horses cattlo ami other stocks so
thcro arc varieties ot queen bees
which aro worth many hundreil times'
their weight In gold. Tho most vain
able strain says tho New Yorl
Herald Is tho Italian and many Ita
Ian b-o farmers demand and recclw
without qucRtlcn prices ranging fron
150 to $200 for a sing o queen bco of i
certain kjnd. Such bees aro sent a!
over tho world.
Tho owner of a bco farm near Ut
tawa Can. goes to Europe annual!-
and brings back with him bees of an
nggrcgato va.ue of thousands o
pounds. Ho Is enabled through the
agency of an Italian firm to effect ar
Insurance upon tho most valuable o-
his queens.
This bco farmer has many strangi
experiences In connection with the
assistants ho Is obliged to engage. Of
courso all bee keepers must submit to
a certain amount ot stinging. But
In somo cases tho poison In tho sting
acts directly upon tho assistants and
makes them alarmingly III. Others
aro lmmuno though ttung hundreds of
times.
Boo farmers nro often applied to by
persons suffering from rheumatism
who with to place themselves In tho
wny of being stung. And strango as
It may seem the virus of tho boo sting
docs often act as a euro to persons
suffering from serious attacks of rheu-
matism. THE AFTER-DINNER ORATOR.
English Innovation Has Many Good
Points to Recommend It.
A Iondon club tho Bartholomew
save Its annual banquet tho other day.
Tho postprandial orators were con-
spicuous by their silence. Not a
speech was made. When tho banquet
had reached tlio oratorical stage littlo
books wero distributed among tho
guests and In these booklets wero
printed tho bpeeches of the gentle-
men who had accepted invitations to
respond to toasts. London Truth says
this banquet was an epoch-making af-
fair. It was certainly a unlquo one
and not unworthy of Imitation on this
sldo of tho Atlantic. Tho Bartholo-
mew club of London has established
a precedent which ought not to bo
ignored In tho United States because
of Its English origin. The banquet
Is entitled to somo consideration and
should bo protected when tho after-
dinner orator like tho brook is In-
clined to "go on forover.'' In con-
grass a speaker is "given permission
to print" and rtolly never delivers
his speech. The plan might work well
it banquets.
In a Hurry.
A widow one day In spring was seen
by the clerk of her parish crossing the
churchyard with a waterlng-poj. and a
bundle.
"Ah Mistress McTavlsh" said tho
clerk "what's yer bus'ness wl" blcllkc
gear as that y'are carryln'?"
"Ah weel Mr. McLachlan" replied
tho widow "I am Just goln' to my
gudeman's gravo. I've got some hay-
hcods In my bundle which I'm goln'
to sow upon It and tho water In tho
can Is just to glo 'cm a spring like."
"The seed wlnna want the water-
ing" rejoined the clerk. "They'll
spring finely thomsolves."
"That may well be" replied the
widow; "but ye dlnna ken that my
gudeman as he lay a-dcelng. Just got
me to promise that I'd never marry
again till the grass had grown above
his grave. And as I've had a good
offer made mo but yestreen ye bee I

The Good Old Name.
The words "esquire" and "gentle-
man" arc among thobo which fall from
our lips dally and yet most of us
would bo rather puzzled to say In
precise language what wo meant by
them. In a recent county court caso
a schoolmaster was ruled out of tho
"gentleman" list. Tho Law Times
points out however that legal dis-
tinctions on the point have been an-
amnions. Tho following are not "gen-
tlemen": A b-iycr of silks a so-
licitor's clerk out of regular work a
commission agent and an audit oillec
clefk. On tho other hand tho follow-
ing have boon held "gentlemen" viz.:

An amusing trait of the Chinosc
character is pointed out In the last
report of tho British consul at Foo-
chow says tho London Dally Mall.
A British company started a match
factory to competo against tho Jap-
anese. It seemed to prosper and then
stopped.
AH tho conevl drily remarks Is. "It
would be well however If they bore
in mind that the Chinaman not only
counts the number ot matches In a

the complaints brought against the
matches hitherto turned out by tho

af Agriculture wrltci? thus of tho
babtts of trees: I
Trco Companionship. In almost
every region ccrtnlnj kinds or trees
aro found together. This Is duo to a
similarity of preferences In regard to
soil heat molsturo bnd light. Two
trees adapted to tho namo conditions
will thrlvo best In thp same situation.
The White Ash and Black Walnut nro
good examples. Havjng similar pref-
erences they havo almost Identical
ranges nnd are very generally associ-
ated. There Is alsq another reason
why tioos accompnny ono another.
A trco may so Influence Its surround-
ings as to mako them favorable to an-
other tree where otherwise they would
ho unfavorable. Ad an cxar pic of
such Influence tho Chestnut on sterile
sandy plains In portions of Nw Eng-
land forms a niucn-brauched tree
which shades the ground and keeps It
moist and cool. Such conditions are
favorable (o tho gqrmlnatlon of the
White Pino In that region; consequent-
ly it Is found coming up abundantly
beneath tho Chestnut. hut not so abun-
dantly on the open unprotected
ground.
Effect of Changu In Surroundings.
A chango in the .iurroundlngs of a
tree always modifies Its habit of
growth. If tho change Is toward more
favorable surroundings tho result Is
seen In Increased vigor rate of growth
and slso; If toward unfavorable sur-
roundings tho revcrbc will bo true.
Tho stately Tullptroo of tho ccntrcl
Eastern states Is said to bo a mere
shrub In Florida. Tho reason Is that
there It is out of Its range of adapta-
tion. Tho Whlto Elm which grows
with tall .and vaserllko form In New
England In the senilarld parts of Kan-
sas and Oklahoma Is low and spread
lng llko an apple troe. Nor Is form
tho only varlablo character. On the
western elm the leaves aro fowcr In
number smaller thicker and much
rougher than on the New England tree.
In other parts of the tree there are
differences of tho samo kind though
they arc not so noticeable as those
In tho form nnd foliage. These varia-
tions havo resulted from tho differ-
ences In soil and climatic conditions
to which the tree has been subjected.
Gradual Change. Tho difference In
form between two trees of the samo
kind In different localities has come
about through gradual divergence of
characteristics. To a certain degree
changes of this kind can be brought
about in practice. When a gradual
change Is made in the surroundings of
a tree a corresponding change takes
place In tho trco itself. Thus If stock
of tho New England elm be slowly
moved westward through many gen-
erations it will gradually change In
form and other characteristics to be
like tho western tree; and It must bo
assumed that this chango is neces-
sary to cnablo it to livo under its
new conditions.
Sudden Changes. Sudden changes
In the surroundings of a trco frequent-
ly cause Its death because It can not
quickly chango Itself to meet tho re-
quirements ot Its new conditions. Tho
New England elm moved at once to
the semiarld west is likely to die be-
cause tt is not adapted to the condi-
tions ot soil light heat and molsturo
of that region. In tho prairie marshes
of northern Indiana there nro occa-
sional knolls which once supported
thrifty oaka ot moisture-loving kinds.
Now that tlio marshes have been
drained-tho drying out of the soil has
caused the oaks to die. Tho chango
was too sudden. Suddenness and
intensity of chango often account for
tho failure of trees to thrlvo when
moved away from the region to which
they wero adapted. This Is also why
eastern trees so often die when moved
to tho west. This Is why nursery stock
grown near by can be moro safely
planted than that grown In a distant
region. It is a practical matter and
should be generally understood.
Grazing In Forests.
Grazing In forests Is receiving the
attention of the experts in forestry
matters. Great damage has been
done to tho forests hy the stockmen
driving their cattle into tho forests
during tho hottest time of summer.
Tho underbrush is browsed off and
tho soft ground tramped co mat it
dees not permit the air to get througu
the soil to the roots of trees. Tho
spongy soil that Is found in tho for-
ests is necessary to tho well being of
many kinds of trees. It Is expected
that tho government will take meas-
ures to lessen the losses from the
causo named.
Alfalfa and Corn.
Up to tho last ten years alfalfa and
ccrn did not grow generally In the
Eamo region tho alfalfa clinging to
the dryer regions where corn iocs not
Courlsh. But during the last decade
tho corn-growing &rcu has been
pushed steadily westward by dry farm
culture and methods that pack tho soil
lo make the. moisture there most avail-
able for the corn crop. Alfalfa on the
other hand has been moving eastward
and northward till now It has swung
away entirely fo to speak from tho
arid regions and grows both In humid
and In arid lands. Whcro the two
crops can bo grown in tho samo lo-
cality thcro is probably no better
combination ot feeds for cattle. Tho
corn is rich In fat-'ornlng material
and tho alfalfa rlcl lu material to
mako muscle. The one furnishes a
great over-balanco of carbohydrato
and thetgther a still larger over-balance
of protein. It Is easy to com-
pound from tho two a ration that Is In
every senso profitable and easy to
feed.
Somo farmers think they tro mak-
ing money feeding corn and pralrlo
hay but there is still more profit In
feeding corn and alfalfa. Alfalfa and
corn and clover and corn am combi-
nations that cannot be excelled for
settle feeding and fattening rrovldud
they can be obtained at a reasonable
cost The fact that several crops of
alfalfa can be grown thu same year
great y reduces the per ton cost ot
alfalfa and gives It a certain advan-
tage over common hay.
