LEARNING TO SPELL.
Maturity and Not Method Said to I the
Leading Factor.
Believing that the most rational
"method of determining what our
teachers might be expected to ac-
complish would lie in discovering
what results the more successful
ones had been able to obtain I ven-
tured to undertake a series of re-
searches which I hoped might servo
as an initial step toward bringing
this problem to a solution. The
material presented in the present
article is intended to show what our
teachers have accomplished in spell-
ing and what therefore may bo rea-
sonably demanded of our schools
on this subject. The traditional
standard in spelling is perfection.
But this standard is unreusonablo
and consequently cannot be too soon
Abandoned.
My researches in spelling wero
made in the form of tests the num-
ber of children examined reaching
nearly 33000. My first test consist-
ed of a column of 50 words the sec-
ond of words in sentences and the
third of spelling as found in compo-
sitions. On directing our attention
to the results of these tests we are
confronted by a number of interest-
ing phenomena. The most striking
of these are: First that in the vast
majority of instances tho results are
very close. In 15 of the 21 school
where test was made the averages
on the second test were from 73. 3 to
77.9. Second while the results in
the lower grades of different schools
showed considerable variation those
in the eighth year classes which rep-
resent the end of 'pe school course
were remarkably even. In 12 of
17 eighth year grades tne aver
ages were from 84 to 88 and in 15
of a total of 20 6ets of eighth grade
compositions examined for spell
ing the variations were only three-
tenths of 1 per cent the results ly-
ing between 90.1 and 99.4.
These figures become doubly re
markable when we consider that
the 21 schools not only represent in-
stitutions in many sections of our
country but that in addition they
are samples of schools conducted
under all conceivable conditions.
Further from a pedagogical stand-
point all varieties of schools are in-
cluded some of them belonging to
the most mechanical while othera
are among the most progressive in
our country.
Do not these results indicate that
in learning to 6pell maturity is the
leading factor while method plays
only a subordinate part? And if
the superiority of the old fashioned
spelling grind cannot be demonstrat-
ed is it not our duty to save tho
child from this grind ? Moreover
as the results prove that beyond a
certain minimum the compensation
for time devoted to spelling is
scarcely if at all appreciable have
we not here discovered an element
of waste which if eliminated
would open the way to an equal en-
richment of the course of study
without detriment to the formal
branches? Dr. J. M. Rice in Forum.
