As anticipated in the brief no
tice of the fire at Hargrove in yes-
terday's Ardhoreite the destruc
tion - of the boysdormitory was
complete. - ; - . I
The building a two-story frame.
was built last fall at a cost of
$1450 and was the private-property
of Prof. J.-T. Johnson who
is the heaviest loser in the calam-
ity. ;- 1 ' -
The fire which was first observ
ed at 4:30 o'clock is said by the
boys who were present to have
started above the ceiling on the
second floor and probably from
the flue but all flues in the build-
inff were quite new. The fire
spread quite rapidly and as only
three of the boys were in the
building at the time the fira-fight-
mg lorce was severely handicap-
ped. By an extreme effort one piano
was taken from the building and
while in the act of getting out the
other the boys ere driven by
smoke and flame from their pur
pose.
The loss is one piano and a
number of string instruments. The
furniture was a total loss. The
property belonging to the boys.
in the nature of trunks cloth
ing books and cash was all
lost. Much of this could have
been saved if the boys had been
about the building but being af
ter school hours nearly all had
gone to the tank to enjoy skating
ror. Johnson had insurance
with the London and Lancashire
company on building $800; on
furniture $200 and on musical
instruments $200.
Prof. Johnson estimates a clear
loss to himself of $600.
Arrangements have been made
to fit up rooms for the accommoda-
tion of the boys at once. Another
building will not be erected before
vacation.

The Coldest Weather.
Voluntary Observer Heald at
Healdton sends an account of the
cold weather for this season and
before which is worth preserving.
It is as follows:
"Satnrday the 11th closed with
a full-fledged blizzard lie ther-
mometer going down during the
night to 14 below zro and on the
12th only went up to 15 above
giving the lowest mean tempera-
ture for 24 hours ending 9 p. m.
on the 12th ever recorded in the
country 5-10 degree above zero.
The winter of 1863 was severe but
no record is given of the degrees.
In January 1SS4 at one time the
thermometer registered 14 below
at 8 a. m. but the day closed at
40 above. This was taken 25

The Reporter is in favor of sin
gle statehood from a financial stand
point. We can't imagine why the
masses of the people here object to
being joined onto Oklahoma un
less they prefer to paying double
the amount of state tax. Thev will
find that their county city and
school tax will be as heavy a bur
den as they will be willing to bear.
The politician the schemer and
the office seeker and the pie hunter
are loud in their denunciation of
single ' statehood. After a few
years of heavy tax burdens after
it is everlastingly too late they will

Penrisgrove N. J Feb. 13.
At the big powder works of the
Duponts at Carney's Point inter-
esting experiments in smokeless
powder are being made by experts
in the employ of the government.'
One of the difficulties that has at-
tended the manufacture so far is
that the powder is not; irholly
smokless and that it apparently '
loses strength through storage..
The experiments" it is said led . to
the discovery that cotton could not
be ground fine enough to bring -about
the best results and that the
powdered pith of cornstalks gave
somewhat bet ter results.
This fa--t is only partly authenti
cated. If it should prove of lasting
value a new source of revenue is
opened up for farmers since thous-
of acres of cornstalks annually go
to waste in the fields although
much is being nsed in the manu-
facture of cellulose.
