The first known of the drowning
was when Mose Walton a riverman
living in a boathouso at the foot of
Sixlh street Braddock saw Schleifer
kneeling on a raft with his hands ex
tended upward while the rait was
floating down tho river. Walton
called to the boy and receiving no
response he obtained a boat and
started after the raft. IWalton took
Schleifer from the raft and the la 1
then told Walton fjliat Miller had
been drowned.
According ti:e Schleifer the two
boarded a light raft constructed of
logs. The raft floated froxl shore
and both becamo excited Miller fall-
ing into the river. Young Schleifer
broke a stick from tho raft and held
it out to his companion who quickly
seized the stick. As Schleifer was
lulling Miller to tho raft the latter's
hands slipped from the stick and he
sank to his death.
"I couldn't swim" said .Sebleifer
"so i just prayed that Tommy would
come up again." . .
