NEEDED SCHOOL REFORM.
Prospective Ptaa Put Bcfore tfCJPeo-
. pie for Penual -At
a recent meeting of the school
board the teachers presented a pe
tition asking a change in the length
of time for recesses iu the daily
session. At present three recesses
are given fifteen minutes in the
morningr the same-in the after
noon and one hour at noon. . The
changes suggested in the petition
are that the morning and afternoon
recesses be shortened and fifteen or
twenty minutes be given at the
noon recess for lunch and the
schools be dismissed at 3 instead
of 4 o'clock.
These changes would require the
teachers and pupils to take their
lunches to school and remain on
the grounds at noon.
Many arguments are offered in
favor of the change:
Nearly all the cities and towns
have adopted the short noon recess
and find that it works well.
The troubles that arise out of
play occur the last half hour at the
noon recess.
It is taxing on the teachers to
patrol the grounds at the noon
hour to regulate conduct. .
The houses are small and all
crowded the greater part of . the
year. There are no hallways in
which pupils may recreate in bad
weather.
If pupils are permitted in the
rooms during the noon hour on
disagreeable days there is more or
floss damage to property and
pupils lose much respect they are
due the school room.
If rain falls after school opens in
the morning many pupils go home
and do not return to school in the
afternoon.
it is impossible to keep some
children from exposing themselves
during the long noon recess in bad
weather. They go to their seats
with their shoes soaked.- and sit
the entire afternoon with damp
cold feet.
Many cases of afternoon tardi
ness and truancy will be saved if
the childrea remain on the grounds
at noon.
. Ample time will be afforded after
3 o'clock -for - teachers'- meetings
which are being crowded out under
the present system for want of
time after 4 o'clock. As it now is
the teachers can hardly collect at
some central place of meeting be
fore nightfall.
rne janitors will be given more
time in which to -clean the bouses
and air them well for the next day
Fuel expenses will be lessened
and the wear and tear of clothes
in rough play at the noon hour
will be saved which is no smal
item.
The only seemingly strong argu
ment against the short noon recess
is that pupils will be injured by
returning to their studies so soon
after lunch. Let it be remembered
that children eat' lightly afc the
noon meal when in school so it is
easy to see that no harm can come
to the pupil from that source.
The board left the petition over
to be considered at some future
time. Perhaps the opinion of the
patrons will be ascertained in some
way before any definite action is
taken.

One Democrat Elected.
Late yesterday afternoon a tele

C. Thomas of Alpine Texas an
nouncing that he was on Tuesday
elected to the office of county
judge of Brewster county by a safe
majority. His opponent was a re
publican and ex-judge of that
connty.
Bennett Thomas is well known
in Ardmore where he practiced
law for several years as the junior
member of the firm of Potter
Ownby & Thomas. He graduated
from the law department of the
University of Texas in 1894 with
the credit of having maintained
through the two years' course the
highest class average ever made by
a student in that institution his
record being 99 1-2 per cent for
the two years.
In the practice he has shown the
same aptitude for sustained and
conscientious study which charac
terized hit university career while
his grasp of principles and powers
of analysis brought him into rec-
ognition among the ablest lawyers
of the Territory. Failing health
compelled him to seek a different
climate and it seems . that in bis
new home his individuality has
made its impress already.
We are proud of Bennett's sue
cess and congratulate the people of
Brewster county for honoring with
their confidence a young man
whose public service will in turn
honor them. '
