THE SABBATH.
There exists unfortunately in
the minds of those unfamiliar with
the eonditions of affairs in the lar-
ger towns of the Indian Territory
an idea that such a tiling a a
proper observance of the sabbath
is somethiiio; unheard of and uu-
thouirht of. It is suiiiioscd that
Sunday in place of bein- d.-vot.-d
t labor as are the other six davs
of the week is simily made a da
of hilarity card iilayinti. with an
occasional homicide thrown in to
give a little zest to the proceedings.
That such a state of affairs docs
not exist in Ardmore or in any of
our larger towns it is tmite unnec-
essary for us to allege. The sab-
baths of Ardmore are as melodi-
ous with sound of sacred bells as
are the sabbath of any New Kno;-
land town. As large a proportion
of our citizens seek the oiiiioituni-
tv to hear the Word expounded
and the way to the narrow gate
made clear as in communities
which like the l'harisee of old
thank (Jod thev are not as we are.
Our churches are numerous
well sustained. Our prea
and
jlt.rs
compare more than favorably with
any town of our size anywhere.
Our town is strangely devoid of
any vicious youthful element. The
pleasures of our young people are
invariably in the way of iunoeent
amusement. Beyond all question
this is a factor of strength to us.
The moral sentiment of any new
community however small it may
be at the start will surely in the
end prevail. The vicious element
in the most abandoned towns of
Nevada. Wyoming ami .Montana
quickly secumbed when the chureh
and Sunday school were erected in
their midst r rom every point of
view then let us remember the
Sabbath to keep it holy.
FRUIT IN ARIZONA.
PhuMiix Arizona Territory and
its immediate vicinity have raised
and marketed thus far this year
$1:S-J."(HK) worth of fruit consist-
ing mainly of apricots peaches
grapes Bartlett pears and lemons.
Less attention is paid then to the
latter than to the others apricots
and peaches forming the major
part of the shipments. Four years
since 181)1 shipments to the same
date aggregated 216M K an in-
crease of 1 109.000. The in-
creased acreage applied to fruit
culture was 'JO per cent only and
the decreased acreage of wheat
barley and oats was 4.1 per cent.
These few figures show the im-
mense profit to be derived from a
few well cultivated acres devoted
sslely to fruit. A teu acre orangu

Angeles California six years old

HOLD YOUR COTTON.
In 1S0G when cotton -jrovin;
in American was in its infancy the
crop sold for ."JO cents a jMiund. In
1S7;5 wjlt.n ws -CMJ.W;
i.l.St the price ran as hij;h as 22 j
'cents a ouud. Since then the fall
lias been jrrailual owinj; to in-:
creased production and lack of all i
system in jjrnwinj or market in;;
until the cry of '"Five Cent Cot-;
ton" eiuivalcnt to starvation for:
irrowr-- were depending sou ly upon
this crop has been heard all over
the land. This year owinto un-
favorable weather conditions and
tin planthi"; of less acreage it is
estimated that the cotton crop will
not exceed T."J-"0.i M m ) bales or on-
ly a little less than double the clop
of 1ST:!.
Tnder these circumstances it is
natural to suppose that the grow-
ers should expect to jjet for their
cotton marly lialf what the crop
of 1H7-1 sold for. Kleven cents a
pound would mean very much to
the cot toll -"Totters and Would
rive an illllllelise st iuiuloiis to the
production of next year. Condi-
tions of the market however will
prevent any such a price bcinj; re-
alized. The buyers are well or-
ganized and are anion; the
shrewdest business men in the
world while the grower arelijjht-
h'' 'y individual I
"v" '""'p- t- with the pro-
ductioii of the entire world. There
is no reason however why they
should not get at least S cents a
pound for their crop.
Cotton i- a staple commodity.;
It is easier to store and hold than
grain. It is exposed to practically
no danger but that of lire against
which it can he insured. If the
growers are wise they will take
the advice of Uoil. Hector !. Lalle
Commissioner of Agriculture of
Alabama and President of the
American Cotton-Ciiowcs'
Pro-
tective Association who is eon-!
vineed that if part of the crop can !
Im- held back until late in the ea- ;
son. S cents a pound and probably I
I '"' easily obtained. This !
j can be done without organizing a
irusi or attempting any co-operative
movement that would prohu- :
lily lie abortive. All that is nee- !
essary is the same business cant ion
that the KtirojM-an farmer exercises
when he has his stacks of wheat
well thatched to stand to weather
months and in that condition looks
upon them as so much in his bank
account . post Dispatch.
