Some candidates for municipal
offices would do well to examiue
the shoal water beneath them for
submarine mines. There may be
a bomb fixed and waiting to destroy
a boom.
The attorney general has issued
an order that prisoners convicted
at the present term of the federal
court at Atoka shall be sent to
the federal prison at Columbus O.
instead of Leavtmv rth Kan.
Dr." D. M. Halley has oieued a
new coal mine near Hartshorne in
the Indian Territory. The mine is
now being equipped with the latest
machinery and will begin opera-
tions in a short time.
The Ardmoreite acknowledges
receipt of a booklet issued by the
Santa Fe Railway Company and
entitled "Facts for Folks Fond of
Figures." It contains a large
amount of statistical information
gleaned from the latest reports of
the interstate commerce commis-
sion. The United States has a subma-
rine torpedo boat and a Sedalia
man has invented an aerial boat
designed for a similar purpose.
Now what chance is a Spanish
battleship going to stand when our
' battleships are firing broadsides at
it from a horizontal position a tor-
pedo boat blowing it up from un-
derneath and the airship dropping
explosives on it from above?

ALL VOTE AYE.
Washington March 9. Presi-
dent McKinley's hands have been
upheld by both branches of the
American congress. With enthu-
siasm fervor and promptness al-
most unparalleled in the senate in
time of peace that body today
jmssed the emergency appropria-
tion bill carrying $183000 of defi-
ciencies and placing at the dispo-
sal of the president $."0000000
for national defense. The vote on
which the measure was passed was
unanimous. Seventy-six short
sharp and emphatic speeches were
delivered in favor of the bill each
one being simply a ringing "aye"
during the roll call upon the pass-
age of the measure. Not only did
every senator present register his
vote in favor of the bill but for
every absent member the authorita-
tive announcement was made that
if he were present he would vote
aye.
FOR CUBAN RECOGNITION.
New York March 9. It can be
stated on the best authority that
the Maine inquiry board report
will be made public inside if 48
hours.
This information was received
from Washington this afternoon
from an absolutely reliable source.
In this connection it is stated that
in case the loss of the Maine is to
be attributed to Spain or Spanish
subjects indemnity will be de-
manded for not less than $10000-
000. It can be argued that as Spain
is unable to control her own sub-
jects in Cuba so as to insure safety
in her harbor the United States
will be .obliged for protection to
her commerce to occupy the har-
bors.
Various plans have been sug-
gested for the recognition of Cuba.
First by treaty with Cuba. This
would require the consent of the
senate. Second by the passing of
a law regulating commercial in-
tercourse with Cuba which would
require the co-operation of con-
gress. Third by sending a diplo-
matic representative to Cuba in
which case the senate would have
to concur. Fourth the president
recognizing a diplomatic represent
ative to Cuba.
MAINE LIKELY A TOTAL LOSS.
Key West Fla. March 9.-It is
common talk here that the return
of the wrecking tug Right Arm
means that all hope of saving any
material part of the Maine has
been abandoned. It is supiosed
that she has sunk so deep iuto the
mud and is so badly wrecked that
she Could lie raised only by build
iug a cofferdam about her and in
curring an expense greater than
the value of the wreck. It is thought
that the United States government
will abandon her to Spain as own
ers of stranded merchant ships
abandon them to insurance com
panies and demand compensation
for a total loss.
GEN. LEE IS OVERWORKED
Richmond Va. March 9 A
warm personal friend of Consul
General Lee here has received a
letter from him in which General
Lee said he was being hard worked
and greatly in need of rest but he
could not think of leaving his post
of duty at such a critical time as
this.
From all over the country come
words of praise for Chamberlain's
cough remedy. Here is . sample
letter from Mrs. C Shep of Little
Rock Ark.: "I was suffering from
a seyere cold when I read of the
cures that had been effected by
Chamberlain's cough remedy. I con-
cluded to give it a trial and accord-
ingly procured a bottle. It gave
me prompt relief and I have the
best reason for recommending it
very highly which I do with pleas-
ure." For sale by T. N. Coleman
and W. B. Frame.
After years of untold suffering
from piles B. W. Pursell of Knit-
nersville. Pa. was cured by using a
single box of De Witt's Witch Hasel
Salve. Skin diseases such as ecsema
rash pimples and obstinate sores
are readily cured by this famous
remedy. City Drug Store.

where damage reports and fear of
dry weather have been coming for
the past three clays mere nave oeen
showers with prospects of more rains
which have dispelled the alarmist
and sent wheat into the pit and bas
totally changed the complexion of
the feeling from that direction. In
foreign news Broomhall noted se
vere frost following rains causing
fears of damage of the foreign. Con-
sumption of breadstuffs during the
last half year shows a reduction as
compared with former seasons if
11000000 bushels. Some talk of for-
eign demand and rumored 15 loads
wheat for France taken from Balti
more. The Government report this
afternoon is being looked forward to
with a probability of 120 million re-
serves likely. Last year only 88000-
000 was given in the report which
however was thought to underrmi
facts. There bas been selling of May
wheat today but the clique has un
doubtedly supported the price at
11.04. Trade dull and outlook today
not bullish.
Corn. Corn firm and higher early.
Good general trade. Cash demand
continues good with prices higher.
Local trade bearish but the outlook
is for lighter receipts.
Oats. Oats quiet with lighter
trade. Cash demand good at slight-
ly better prices.
Provisions. Strong for lard which
was van ted there being less hogs
and the weights are proving lower
than last year. Cash trade fair. Es-
timated hogs tomorrow 23000.

of the ships guns were thrown
from the port to the starboard

among Cuban families oyer the
renewal of Weyler's cruelties
and methods of persecution ar
the leading features of today's
news. There is no doubt that
Amerieaus here uow are in
great danger and that Blanco
has thrown on the mask of
metkness witl. which he tried
to impress in his favor public
opinion in the United States
and is now fully satisfying the
bloody instincts of the most
rabid partisans of Weyler.
Spaniards here are show
ing the greatest enthusiasm
for war against the Unit-
ed States. Oue of the greatest
causes of complaint against the
United States publicly ex-
pressed from Blanco down to
the last volunteer is that the
United States is sending war
supplies to the insurgents in
cases said to contain food for
the starving reconcentrados.
In less than three days over
eighty well kuown persons in
Havana have been thrown in
the dungeons of La Cubana
and Moro castle with the same
harshness and cruelty as in the
times of Weyler.
The police declare today that
they have discovered and seized
four large cases containing dy-
namite with which conspirators
intended to blow up the build-
ings of the Spanish govern-
ment in Havana.
