CONFEDERATE BANQUET.

Mr. Jefferson DavUOIven anOva-
tloo la Wasfalnttoa.
New York Jan. 19. The tenth
annual banquet of the United Con-
federate Veterans' camp of New
York given in honor of Gen. R.
E. Lee was held at the Waldrof-
Astoria last night 300 persons be
ing in attendance. One of the
features was the presence of a large
nnmW of women. Edward
Owen commander of the camp
presided.
While the dinner was in pro
gress Mrs. Jefferson Davis was es-
corted into the center box in the
balcony overlooking the banquet
room. She was given an ovation.
Fans and napkins were thrown in
the air and roses were flung to the
hox from the tables below. In a
short time Mrs. Davis was sur
rounded a etoud which deserted
the banquet tables to greet her
An informal reception of an hour
or more was accordingly held by
the widow of the former head of
the confederacy.
The dinner over Commander
Edward Owen proposed the toast
"The President of the United
States and the Army and Navy."
It was drunk standing.

to the Heiald from Washington
Eays:
When Mr. Bryan reaches Wash
mgton today the time and
place of holding the democratic
national convention will probably
be determined.
While the determination of
the questions is in the hands o:
the committee and will not there
fore be formally settled until the
meeting of that body in February
there is a disposition on the part
of the party managers to take
watever action may accord with
the wishes and the judgment of
the man who it is believed is
certain to be the party's nominee
for the presidency.
While active work is being done
by representatives of Kansas City
and Milwaukee most of the south
ern democrats are inclined to the
belief that it would be the best
politics to hold the convention in
New York City.
The opinion among democra
leaders in congress is that unless
Mr. Bryan is strongly opposed to
New York the chances of the Em
pire City obtaining the convention
are excellent.

A Father's Message.
Pettsville Pa. Jan. 20. The
body of William Galloway fire
boss at the Kaska William mine of
the Dodson Coal company who
was entombed by the fall of coal
on December 18 has been recov
ered. Before the body was found
these words were discovered writ
ten on sheet iron on a brattice door
addressed to his wife:
"I think I am gone. Goodbye
boys Guy and Willie. I don't
think you will see your father any
more. I think this is Wednesday."
It is believed he lived but three
days. His body lay prostrate in
the chute.
It has been demonstrated repeat-
edly in every state in the Union and
In many foreign countries that Cham-
berlain's Cough Remedy is a certain
preventative and cure for croup. It
has become the universal remedy for
that disease; M. V. Fisher of Lib-
erty W. Va. only repeats what has
been said around the globe when he
writes: "1 have used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy in my family for sev-
eral years and always with perfect
success. We believe that it is not
only the best cough remedy but that
it Is a sore cure for croup. It has

New Steering Appliance.
London Jan. 19. Lieutenant
Commander Col well the United
States navy attache in London
witnessed today at Yoevil the test
of an invention offered to the Unit
ed States government for steering
torpedoes and submarine craft by
means of a wireless electrica
device on the lines of the Marconi
The patents are held by Cecil Vari
cas an English inventor an em
ploye of A. C. Higgs United States
consular agent at Weymouth. The
experiments left no doubt that craft
can be directed by means of an
ether wave the model being con
trolled by a snore motor witn no
other connection than the current
working upon the rudder. The
inventor claims that this can be
applied to torpedoes and subma
rine craft.
Lieutenant Commander Colwell
will make a report on the subject
to the navy deparmtent.
A puny child is always an anxiety
to the parents. There seems gener
any no reason wny tne little one
should be weak when it is bo well
fed. But the fact is that it does not
matter how much food the child
takes if the stomach cannot extract
the nourishment from it. No benefit
can be derived from just eating.
That is the condition of many a sickly
child. The stomach and organs of
digestion and nutrition are
not doing their work and the
body is really starving. It is little
use to give fish foods like cod liver
oil or emulsions in such a case be
cause these also have to be digested;
they may lighten the stomach's labor
but they don't strengthen it. Strength
is what the stomach needs. Dr
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery
strengthens the stomach nourishes
the nerves and increases the action
Of the blood making glands. It is
superior to every other preparation
for children's use on account of its
body building qualities and also be-
cause it is pleasant to the taste and
contains no alcohpl whisky or other
intoxicant. Dr. Pierce's Pleasant
Pellets are a valuable aid when the
bowels are irregular. They are small.
Children take them readily.

true womanly health. Most men don't
know that when a woman is weak nerv-
ous irritable and despondent there is
invariably something radically wrong
with the delicate feminine organs with
which her entire physique is in sensitive
touch. There is one and just one rem-
edy tried and proven that will put
things right when the
feminine organism is
weak or diseased. It is
Dr. Pierce's Favorite
Prescription. It re-
stores perfect health to
the weakened organs
and makes them strong
clean and virile. It
makes wifehood happy
and motherhood easy.
It banishes momine
sickness and all other discomforts that
nreeede maternity. It makes labor light
short and almost painless. It helps to
make real " new women." An honest

Many Pension Claims.
Washington Jan. 20. A large
number of claims for pensions are
being received by the pension of
ficers as a result of the Spanish
war. Statistics prepared by the
bureau show that the percentage of
ftrmlicntions from volunteers is
arc
much largei than from the regulars
The battle of San Juan was select

calculations as the greatest num
ber of casualties occured there
There were 192 regulars killed 1
097 wounded and 55 missing
Claims for pensions from the regu

battle 34 volunteers were killed
177 wounded and 45 missing. The
claims for pensioners from yolun -

23 regiments of regulars and three
regular batteries engaged in this
fight as against nine regiments of
volunteers. One regiment lost

Just a little dollar on its mission
sent makes a lot of people glad each
time a coin is spent. You pay it .to
the butcher for nieat to give you
strength he takes it to the grocer
from whom it goes at leDgth some
pretty bit of cloth or lace his better
half to buy or helps to get her winter
hat to make her rivals sigh. The dry
goods man sends on tne coin to pay
his market bill and though the coin
is often spent it stays a dollar still
and every time it's spent at home
some act of good is done in "fcoom

But if you take that shining coin
and break the local chain the
chances are that from afar 'twill not

Just keep the little coin at home
