this morning he came around and
said it was a mistaken idea as he
found that it cost him more time in

the price of subscription. "Just send

Mr. John Ross a prominent farmer
in the Heed community eight miles
west of the city was here today. Mr.
Ross reports the wind storm of last
Tuesday as having done a large
amount of damage to the corn oats
and wheat in his neighborhood. He
says that the young corn was whipped
off at the ground and the fields were
covered over with drifted sand and
dirt in some places several inches.
The yo ing oats suffered a like fate
and the few wheat fields that yet
gave signs of producing a crop of
wheat were completely annihilated.
and today t he farmers commenced to
plow them up preparatory to plant-
ing them in corn. Mr. Ross had 95
acres in corn large enough to plow but
it all went down before the cutting
winds and lie says the Held today
shows no signs of having last Friday
contained a fine stand of young corn.
He 'hinks however that the young
stalks of both corn and oats were not
covered too deep with the sand and
loose dirt will soon come out again
and may yet make fair crops but the
wheat fs a total loss and will be plow-
ed up and the ground planted in other
crops. Gainesville Register.

The merchants with one exception
yesterday signed an agreement to
close their doors at 7 p. m. thus giv
ing their clerks a little time of their
own. This seems to us highly proper
as the business after that hour is said
not to be sufficient to pay for the coal
oil consumed. The exception to the
rule is Captain W. F. Whittington.
who reserves the right to cKe when
it suits him to do so. The Ardmorb-

studying the matter over fall in with
other merchants in the matter of
earlier closing hours.

Htli for Raw Trial.
The hearing of the motion for a
new trial in the Crews case was set
for today. Col. C. L. Potter went to
Denton Sunday to represent the state
in the motion. The points upon
which the defense seek to obtain a
new hearing are very frail. One of
them is that the word guilty was
spelled wrong in the jury's verdict
and another is that one of the Jury
claims to have had conscientious scru-
ples against Inflicting the death pen-
alty. This juror says he answered
that he had no such scruples In-fore
he qualified but now he finds he was
mistaken. This however would be
likely to make the verdict stick all
the tighter for if the evidence against
the defendant is so conclusive that It
would induce a man who has consci-
entious scruples against the infliction
of the death ienalty to impose it. the
logical conclusion must be that the
verdict was Just and should be carried
out. Gainesville Register.

A few days since the Texas legisla-
ture by a unanimous vote passed
resolutions on the death of Queen
Victoria and a'ter same being duly
made a matter of record it wm dis-
covered that the old lady was still in
the enjoyment of her usual good
health.
It appears that an Austin paper
for April fool purposes published an
account of the queen's death and
that the legislator were the first to
fall Into the trap. Next day that
body was the laughing stock not only
of Austin but of the country as far
as news Is carried on lightning's
wings. The resolutions were prompt-
ly rescinded and expunged from the
Journal.
