Washington Dec. 14. The Sec
retary of the Interior sent to Con
gress to-day an estimate of expenses
of the Dawes commission for the
fiscal year ending June. 30 1900.
It is estimated as follows:
Salary of four commissioners and
employees $GO000; salary of em-
ployees including secretary of com
mission $39980; contingent ex-
penses $3r00. Total $123480.
The commissioners in their state
ment say: By the rules and reg
ulations governing the selection
and renting prospective allotments
of lands of the Five Civilized Tribes
this commission is required to es-
tablish an office within the terri
tory of each tribe for the purpose
of registering each selection of
lands made by any member of the
tribe for his allotment. The com
mission has made a conservative
estimate of the appropriation nec
essary for the establishment and
support of these offices and with
the amounts necessary for apprais
ing and allotment of these lands to
the Seminoles and preparation of
the Choctaw Chickasaw and Creek
citizenship rolls the additional
amount of $80000 over the appro
priation for the present fiscal year
will be required."
These appropriations will be em
bodied in an amendment to the In
dian appropriation bill and will be
immediately available.

The Denison Herald says:
A countryman was in town today
with about 50 quails. He said he
killed them all at six shots. That
accounts for the thinning out of
these game birds in this section.
Farmers in the city from the Ter-
ritory report a great benefit from
the cold snap that has been with
us for some time. It has improv-
ed the health of the country vastly.
A great deal of sickness prevailed
prior to the coining of cold weather
and freezing and it is nearly all
cleared up now.
Farmers who have tried to get
leases in the Indian Territory re-
cently report that it is rather a
hard matter to get a leaseespecially
for land that is iu cultivation and
on account of the uncertainty of
holding leases it would be risk to
improve a piece of ground with no
prospect of remaining there if the
land should change ownership in
the meantime.
'The Dawes commisson and our
entanglements in the Indian Terri
tory are knocking us out of a great
many new settlers" said a promi
nent Indian land owner today
'There are a great many people
coining to our country who want
to take leases on lands and who
would imnrove the farms build
houses and improvements but they
are hampered by the unsettled con-
dition of affairs at present and
cannot make leases that will be
satisfactory to all concerned there!
fore we have to lode our opportu
nities."

The Drummer Wilted.
An officious drummer had the
sails taken out of him this morn
ing at the Katy depot by one of
Gainesville's bright street urchins.
The drummer was having his
trunks checked and during the
time the porter commenced to
sweep the baggage-room -when
the aforesaid knight of the grip
made a full-grown roar and in
verv unchaste language gave his
opinion of the general ingredients
of Gainesville dirt. The youth
above mentioned was standing
nar by taking in the situation.
and removing a cigarette stump
from his lips saidr "That's an
other one o' them fellows what was
raised on a dirt floor and ain't
used to sweepin'." The drummer
wilted. Register.
