31. K. Sangster in New York Tribune
The Nile ami the MUissii.
Yly i.s it that sim-e days before
even tradition begins the annual
inundation by the Nile of the terri-
tory alont' its banks has been regard-
ed as a national ble.sintr while sim-
ilar rises of the Mississippi every
year inflict almost incalculable dam-
age to a country whose residents re-
gard the ancient Egyptians and the
modern ones too for that matter
as little better than barbarians Tin?
only possible answer is that in the
one case intelligent advantage ha.s
been and 'is taken of nature's irre-
sistible workings while iu the oth-
er an attempt whose hopelessness
was demonstrated long ago is made
to interfere with them. The condi-
tions of life and agriculture along
tho two rivers are by no means so
dissimilar sis to warrant the adop-
tion of exactly contrary methods.
The waters of the Mississippi bring
down in solution every spring an
amount of potential wealth almost
beyond human powers of estima-
tion and instead of accepting the
gift we do our utmost to bury it all
under the waters of the Gulf of
Mexico. We have millions to spend
for levees that stand only when they
are not needed and more millions
with which to buy artificial ferti-
lizers for exhausted acres but seem
to lack the adaptability to circum-
stances that enables naked fellahs
to exult over a phenomenon for
which learned and scientific occi-
dentals feel horror and fear. New
