two days is somewhat "abating.'' A
plain common-sense view" of the
matter leads ns to know that there
is no immediate cause" for alarm.
What has been said and done has
been effective in putting our peo
ple on their guard and allows them
every opportunity for protecting
their children and homes. We
understand that quite a number
nave taken their chuaren out or
school to await further develop-
ments' their judgement "may" be
good but we see no particular oc-
casion for doing so. " Any case of
sore throat common among school
children will under the present ex-
citement be looked upon as suspic
ions and while It should not be
so we repeat prevention is our
best safeguard. We have physicians
here who deny forcibly that any-
thing bordering on diphtheria has
appeared in our city while others
equally as honest in their convic-
tions take issue with - them . This
eaves us in a position of doubt
the benefit to be given as we choose
to decide. We are pleased to state
after diligent enquiry that at the
present there is not a single case
of diphtheria or anything border-
ing close to it within our city. Yet
while we make this statement we
admonish all to act with caution
wherever a doubt arises.

Cupid's Work.
There was a wedding in town
last night that was a little out of
the usual run of such events in
that the fair bride was 63 years of
age and the blushing groom was
63. The wedding was the result
of a long and devoted courtship-
made longer than their fondest
hopes desired by their lack of the
filthy lucre werewith to purchase a
license. It had become known to
the clerks at Jake's store that the
old couple were eager to marry and
only the above conditions prevent
ed. The clerks proposed to help
them along and chipped in funds
and secured a license for James
Studervant and Mrs. N. E. Hazion
(nee Moore) to be united in the
holy bonds of matiimony. A
Holiness preacher was called in and
the happy couple both quite
sprightly swore to love honor and
obey each other aa long as life
should last. They were married
in Jake's store at seven o'clock
last evening and were the recipients
of many useful and needed gifts
from the boys and others who from
curiosity witnessed the . wedding.
The happy couple are now at their
home in the south part of the city

There is an object of charity in
the office rooms of Drs. Gardner
& Richardson. This ' is Chas.
Scribner the man who was acci-
dently shot last Sunday resulting
in the amputation of his arm Mon-
day. From that time he has occu-
pied a cot in the office of these
physicians and has an attendant
all the time they are penniless and
have to live. The family of the
wounded man are also penniless
they have no home and are sick at
a neighbor's house in the country.
Of course a physician's office is no
place for this man to be located
and while he has been and is be
ing cared for by these gentlemen
at their own expense without even
a hope of reward they think and
justly too that the charitable peo
ple of our city should take the case
in charge and arrange for more
suitable rooms and provisions for
the man.
