SPARE THE BIRDS.
A Protest Agalaat the Wantoa Destruc-
tion of tl rcihrd Tiibe.
Aa American dealer sold last year
2000000 bird skins. All were used
for ornamenting woman's attire. Wo-
men ought to cry down this ranity
that feeds and pampers the destruc-
tion of the feathered tribes. The birds
sacrificed are of course those of the
richest plumage and of course also
those that will be least easily re-
placed. In fact. if this thing continues.
American bird life of the gentler order
will pretty soon becooia extinct Is not
the warfare the American humane and while you are sleeping; then lasU
society has opened upon the bird-skin ! bat not least a watchman
traffic wholly justifiable? We think This last institution is a peculiar
so. The destruction referred to con- one. If you did nt hve him you
tributes not one whit to human need would be liable to find some-
or human comfort It adds nothing thing stolen every night. Strangest
to the v intellectual nothing to the
mental. It is simply wantonness
practiced at the beck of fashion and
as silly and meaningless a fashion
too as erer was spawnod from the
brain of a man milliner. There are
birds in plenty that shed their plum-
age to supply the vain demand for
flaming head gear. Why should the
fashion monarchs be inexorable and
also demand the bodies of our feath
red songsters?

I shoo'.d like to hear fro n the Socie-
ty for the Protection of Bird why the
only birds' feathers the wearing of
which they countenance are the
plumes of the ostrich. A lad y tells me
that she has dec ihed an i iTit it oa to
join the society because it doe not
protect the ostrich and la justifies' : in
of her decision she ffires the follow. ng-
account of plucking- ostriches on a
feather farm. If the faut are ao -u-rate
I think that they fully prove her
case.
"The good ladies who bilonj to
this society and who condemn aa
cruel the simple mere of death
should go to the ostrich farm near
Cairo Egypt I believe the largest

SERVANTS IN
INDIA.
They Save AaaoTanco How
to Frsveat
Their tteallnc
Domestic life in India is without the
annoyance of the servant question.
You never need tell a servant what
yon want done In that country; they
seem to know it by intuition. The
ordinary honsehold has twelve ser-
vants a cook waiter ft sort of
valet de chambre and if you have
two horses two grooms; one man to
run before you when vou go out rid-
ing and take care of your horse; an-
other man whose business is to collect
for your horse's feed the grass which
' grows in ft vine-like manner upon the
roads. .Then in summer time you re-
quire three to four men who work
. the large fans or ''punkas" orr you
night and day whi e you are waking
of all the only man who is
sucoe-sful watchman must be a thief
the caste of a t tie. He makes no
pretensions of being anything else
but so long as you have him in your
employ nothing will ever be stolen.
While the native Hindoos are very
dishonest the only way in which to
keep your valuables safe is to give
t iem into their hanJ;S for keeping. If
I locked 8500 in my chest I would be
sure that some tl i e or other one of
my servants would steal It; but if I
should give the money to a servant
and tell him to keep It for mi he would
guard it with his life.
-y-roctor.
A doctor had been in tha habit for ft
limber of years of giving professional
ftdvice a lady in reduced circum-
stances whom he regarded as hardly
able to offer him any compensation.
At length she "eased consulting him
and he did not see her for a long
time. Finally happening to meet
beron the street he said to hert
"Why. Mrs. wh it has became of
you? You haven't been near me for
month." Weli the fact la doctor"
she said in all simplicity I didn't
seem to gain very much and I though.!
I'd consult a pay-d ctor. "
