proof of growing cordiality be-

The editor of the Cale Leader is
a preacher and has regular ap-
pointments as shown by the fol
lowing: "The editor went to

t The Marietta Monitor brieves
in incorporation and has a founda-
tion for its belief. It says: "In-
corporation has built up Marietta

she built in the previous six or
eight years yet there are those
who see in this no argument for
incorporation. No man is so blind
as the man who will not sec."
Because of its position as the
"Official organ of Oklahoma Dem-

be pardoned for giving vent to its
feelings toward the Republican
party; Its latest issue contains
this editorial squib: "The multi-

were under mortgage to the gold-

Czar Reed may not wield the
gavel in the house after that body
gets a whack at him next winter.
Republican members of Congress
who remain in Washington are
discussing with considerable free-
dom the possibilities of a contest
on the speakership. Until adjourn-
ment there wa3 hardly so much as
a rumor of opposition to Mr. Reed's
election. This anti-Reed talk
would be of less importance if Mr.
Reed himself had not made a
statement respecting the next
speakership shortly before final ad-
journment. He said that he would
not enter into ;t contest for re-
election. . lie defined his position
in such a way as to leave no doubt
of his intentions. If the Republi-
can caucus desired with practical
unanimity to renominate him Mr.
Reed said he would accept re-election.
This talk may die out and
leave Mr. Reed without opposition
or it may easily grow into such ex-
pression of opposition that Mr.
Reed will refuse to be a candidate.
The following from the Durant
Times will give some idea of the
fertility of Territory soil and of
the proportions of the business
done by some of the tillers: "Joe
Davis who lives three miles south
east of here has marketed at this
place 7S bales. lie remarked
while in one day this week that he
would market three more bales and
had lost fully IS hales by not being
able to get in the field during bad
weather. Mr. Davis is a prairie
farmer and his record certainly
speaks well for this portion of the
Territory . "
Mr. Dockeky who was the
ranking Democratic member of the

in a statement deprecating the ex-
travagant appropriations of the
Fifty-fifth Congress outside of the
war appropriations calls attention
to the fact that the estimated de-
ficit of the current fiscal year will
be $1 " MJ0 MM) and that for the
next fiscal year $100 (MM) (MM)
making it probable that before the
first of January 1!)01 the govern-
ment will have to choose between
a farther increase in taxation an-
other bond issue and the issue of
treasury certificates of indebtedness
to raise money that will have to lie

Creek Nation Aflairs.
Washington March 11. Tams
Rixby the chairman of the com-
mission to treat with the Five Civ-
ilized Tribes arrived here today
and held a conference with Secre-
tary Hitchcock arranging details
incident to the inauguration of the
survey preliminary to the. allot-
ments of land in the Creek nation
in the Indian Territory the estab-
lishment of a local land office for
the Creeks at Muscogee and other
matters. He reported that on
March 20 the commission would
hold a conference to consider be-
tween S(KH) and 10000 contested
citizens passes in the Cherokee
nation many of which however
would be thrown out as having al-
ready been passed upon. About
the middle of April the commission
will begin the task of taking the
census of the Choctaw nation. Mr.
Eixby stated that the allotments of
the Creek lands would be com
pleted some time next year and he
predicted that within six or eight
years the lands of all the Five
Tribes would be allotted and all
the Indians placed on the same
citizenship basis as the whites.
(Jen. Porter and V. T. Ilutchins
of Muskogee 1. T. are here repre-
senting the interests of the cattle-
men and have been urging upon
Ihe department the admission of
cattle into the Creek lands under
money leases by the Indians which
the department so far holds the
Curtis act will not permit after
April until after the allotment of
the land. This allotment cannot
be effected thrs year and thev pro-

they defraud the ignorant and su
