Mr. Cameron in his talk with a re- !
porter told of the doga that are ued
for sledging during the winter in tha
Northwest territories of Canada.
Six or eight doga are used on each
aledge. They are fed only once in
twenty-four hours and that is in the
morning before the start is made and
after the dogs are in harness. At
that time about four pounds of frozen
fish are given to them. Everything
must be in readiness for the start
and the men must look to it that they
are at hand to jump on the aledgea
for at the very instant that the last
morsel of fish disappears the doga are
off at a break-neck sped. Strange aa
it may seem the drivers do not dare to
feed the do unlese they are In her-
nesa. Otherwise they would scatter.
nd nothing more would be Been oi
them. They are driven with one long
rein attached to the leader.
A whip with a very short handle and
a very long lash ia nsed to urge them
on tnough in mo-it cases they need no
urging for they teem to feel that the
faster they go the quicker they win
eome to the poet where food an j
warmth and a lazy life await them.
They travel often aa far aa ninety
miles a day.
Why la It?
"It ia a somewhat carious thing"
observed a commercial traveler "that
even the most faattdioua individual
who will reject with indignation a
tumbler that had been used by another
diner at hotel will not hesitate to
drink out of a enp or glass on a rail-
way train although it may have beea
used by thousands of persona many
of them of not over cleanly haDita.
The aame thing applies to the per
sons who nse the ice-water coolers In
public buildings or hotels. Why then
siiould so much fastidiousness be c s-
nlaved bv oeraons at a hotel or other
table as to the nse of a tumbler from
which a single person had previously
drank?"
