Awful Powder Explosion Near Toulon
In France Sentries on
Duly Killed.
Toulon March o. The naval
powder magazine of La Ooubran
between La Seyne and Toulon in
the department" of Var southern
France exploded at "J;. 'JO o'clock
this morning. AH of the sentries
on duty at the magazine were kill
ed and a number of inhabitants of
the surrounding ditri-t the build-
ings in which were razed. Forty
corpses have already been recover-
L The cause of the explosion is
not known.
Fifty thousand kilogrammes
equal to more than 1200O pounds
of bla-k powder exploded. It
looks as though a volcanic explo
sion eruption had occurred the
country being swept almost bare
withiu a radius of two miles
houses destroyed trees overturned
and distorted fields devastated and
covered with stone and brick dust.
Although it was a clear night
the explosion was so terrific as to
produce a slight rainfall.
Fortunately the neighboring peo-
ple escaped. It is now believed
the explosion originated in chemi-
cal decomposition in smokeless
powder. There is no suggestion
of foul play.
