IT'S LP TO THE TOW IS S.
The Secretary Rules That Each Town
May do its Own Platting.
visit to the townsite commis-
siou rooms tins morning ty tne
reporter developed the fact that
the routine work is proceeding
satisfactorily.
Col. Johnson informed the" re
porter that he had just prepared
and sent out letters to all incor
porated towns in the Chickasaw
nation m conformity with the re
cent ruling of the secretary of the
interior in which he holds that
under the existing law each town
may lay out plat and survey its
own lots under instructions from
the commission and the depart
ment.
The exterior limits of each town
are to be sutveyed by the commis-
sion after which the citizens may
employ surveyors and make their
own plat which must be submit
ted to the commission for approval
and bv it to the department.
When such plats are . completed
and approved the appraisement of
the property will be made by the
commission.
This is done to facilitate the
townsite work and to give the peo-
ple greater satisfaction by allow
ing them to decide among them
selves all controversies growing
out of the crooked streets and
other inaccuracies in the present
townsites.
It remains to be seen whether
the people in the towns are willing
to hasten the work at their own
expense. The work will cost
probably from $5(K) to $:iiHM) in
each town according to size and
under the secretary's ruling this
cost must be borne by the people
of the respective towns.
Col Johnson requests each town
to which he has sent letters to in-
dicate at an early date whether it
will embrace the opportunity af-
forded by the secretary's instruc
tions. Those accepting will be
tne one whose exterior limits are
first surveyed by the commission.
