RAILROAD LINES OF AMERICA
This Country Ahead of All Others in
Mileage and EquipmenL
Apparently the construction of new
railroads and the extension of old
ones has added -something like (i.000
miles of main track to the .'team
lines of the United States in the year
ls02. This will bring the total mile-
age of the country up to about 205.(H0.
No other grand division of the earth's
surface can show any such flguros as
these. Europe has several times the
population of the United States but
she falls considerably short of this
country in railroads her main track
of steam lines reaching about 185.000
miles at the end of this year allow-
ing In 1302 a construction a little
above the average of that of recent
previous years. The entire mileage j

NORDAU SEES TROUBLE AHEAD
Writer Predicts Ssngjlnary World
Struggle in Pacific.
In the course of an exhaustive re-
view of the history of the world con-
tributed to the Vienna Neue Frele
Preaae by Max Nordau the writer
deeply deplores the growth of mili-
tary Imperialism In the United States
and aaya that by the admission of the
spirit of militarism which waa for-
merly rigorously excluded America Is
raising obstacles to the entrance of
emigrants whose only capital la their
strong working arms.
Speaking of the future of the new
world. M. Nordau says the opening of
the Panama canal under American
ownership will mark the beginning
of a new epoch.
The tragic stage of the world's hie

At first the Anglo-Saxon element
will seek to drive out the German and
French flags floating over single

struggle will be carried further to the
Asiatic coast where Anglo-Saxons and

Russians will have to decide the mo-
mentous world questions of whether
eastern and southern Asia ahall re-
main British or Ruslan. To this fort
cast M. Nordau adds:
"One can only Imagine with horror
what such a gigantic struggle of na-
tions and races will signify."

FASTEST CRUISER EVER BUILT
Novik Can Shaw Her Heelc to Any of
the War Vessels.
During its trial trips in the bay of
Danzig the cruiser Novik which was
built by Schichau maintained a speed
of over 2B knots per hour for six
hours and an average cf 26 knots per
hour during a trip of three hours.
The vessel was not accepted by tha
owners until the required speed had
beeu made by Its own crew on trial
trips lasting for several hours.
The large English armored cruiser
Drake Is to make 23 knots; whether
ft can do it is yet to be proved. The
Ilcgue which may be taken to b? a
sister ship of the Drake ought to
have made 23 knots. Its trial trips
have shown however that It is ca-
pable of doing only 22 knot:;.
The Novik thus remains by far the
fastest cruiser in t world.

Almost Impossible to Drive Buggy
Through a Gully.
Deputy Sheriff Chtllingworth re-
turned laat night from Hauula Koo-
lauloa where he went to prosecute
the men who created mischief at elec-
tion there. The deputy states thai
on his way back over the Pall he had
an experience with the wind which
he will never forgot. He was driving
& bupjjy with two horses and was ac-
companied by Officer Apana. The
wind In the Pall gap was something
terrific on the return trip. The topi
of the buggy would not close down
tight ao the deputy had to tear It
off to allow as little hold for the wind
as possible. Even then It was almost
impossible to cross the Prll. The
deputy tried to whip the horses bun
found this very iiffleult. the resist-
ance of the wind being ao great. While
right In the gap the wind iirted the
rear end of the buggy ao that the hind
wheels for a few momenta were clear
off the ground while the wagon pole
waa curved like a bow. It was only
by frantic effort that the horses fin-
ally managed to pull through the gap
