\Yr cannot sec wherein Mr. Flynn
expects to benefit the act ual settler by
passing a law making it possible for
him to prove up at the end of 14
months. Such a law can In no wise
benefit the actual settler nor can it
prove beneficial to the new country
in any manner, shape or form that
this paper can conceive of. The only
persons to he benefited by silt'll a
law would be the speculator* who are
holding claims merely for rise in
value with no intent whatever of
making homes, and perhaps others
who desire to furnish money for
proving up and thereby gain a foot-
hold which may result in their being
able to deal in strip lands after while
at a hansome profit. So long as the j
title to a settler's claim is in the;
government that settler i- free from
landed taxation and his home i' abso-
lutely free from the possibilities of
debt other than the government price
of the land. There is not one settler
in ten today in the country who could
prove up and pav for his land at the
end of 14 months without borrowing
the money to do it. The quickest

have had no winter weather of any
moment. The days have passed the
minimum in length, the sun Is get-
ting higher and day by day wields a
more powerful effect ujm>u the weather.
The ground Is practically dry and
there Is comparatively nothing to
produce cold now. We may have a
little spell of winter yet but It will
be too short to amount to much If It

It will.

Tiik Knld Weekly Tribune to the
best of our knowledge was the first !
paper in the strip to enter an earnest
protest against the introduction of
patent medicine advertisement* into
til*-strip publications. The mission
of the Tribune at that time was to
elevate the printing business and bold
up prices, but a recent issue of that
paper reveals tIn- fact that it has dis-
covered “A 'lire cure for piles." We
hope the attack will not prove fatal
to the Tribune, a* it is one of the
neatest papers In the whole country

and safest way to make a self-support-
ing country of the strip territory is
to require actual settlement and the
years residence. This will place a
great deal more of the land in cultiva-
tion and thus largely increase pro-
duction. Under the 14 months plan
of proving up comparatively few acres
on each claim would be placed In
cultivation and the bulk of the land
would go into the hands of speculators
from the very start.

that company on a basis of last year's

to let the law take It* course and re-

Mr- A T. Arnold brought two
curiosities to the Republican office
tbi' week. Due was an old geography
published in 1*12. The maps show
the states east of the Mississippi
river and designate* all west of that
river as Loulsana. The l*>ok also
contains a {rentes on the subject of
astronomy and among ttie statistics
given is a statement that tin* popu-

the county printing was to he let. and
Noland voted to give It t<> the Daily

has been denouncing him bitterly for
