—The Harper Advocate last week
told of a misfortune that happened at
the Methodist church in that city.
The time had come for passing the
£ hat for an Important collection when
khe leaders of the church hoped to
^ | gather in a goodly sum of the coin,
when all at once the fire bell rang and
away went the men folks to see where
the fire was. It proved to be a gaso*
line stove on fire at the home of Dr.
Smlthisler, which was extinguished
with no particular damage further
than knocking out the church collect-
ion.

—Beyond a reasonable doubt some
of the young fellows of Jefferson are
sports. Two young sports took their
girls to a show at Medford last Satur-
day night and we unintentionally
overherd a conversation in which an
inventory of the evenings expendit-
ures was being gone over. In the
first place the girls both had comps
but the young men each had to buy
his own ticket. , The surrey was
gotten by a friend who agreed to stand
good for the hire. At Medford they
bought post cards, amounting to two
cents; a dimes worth of candy was
purchased, each one paying five cents
on it. Afterwards one bought fifteen
cents worth of candy but wouldn’t let
the other in on it, then each bought
himself a cigar. Total money spent
was 37 cents. The Jefferson boys are
sports and no mistake.—Jefferson Re-
view.
The Johnston-Brattain elevator,
whioh was partially destroyed by fire
Ia few weeks ago, is being rebuilt.
The owners are replacing the mill and
[ elevator nearly exactly as it was be-
fore the fire and, as the work is being
pushed with all possible haste, they
expect to have it back in working or-
der before there Is another grain crop
to handle. They were urged to put
in an alfalfa mill In connection with
jthe other business, but, after due ccn-
(sideration, decided to let this matter
be for awhile.-Pond Creek Vidette,

MARKET LETTER
Special to the Journal.
Kansas City Stock Yards,March, 29.
Cattle receipts last week were 35,0001
head here, about the same as in the
previous week, and the market made I
a net gain of 15 to 25 cents for the
week. There was a reverse Wednes-
day, but small supplies later in the
week allowed salesmen to retrieve
part of the loss of Wednesday. The
run today is 10,000 head here, mar-
ket on steers steady to 10 lower, while
cows and heifers are mostly steady,
and stockers and feeders are firm. A
larger percentage are fed steers today
and the best brought 6.75, with a fair I
number of sales around 6 .50, and ha1' |
the sales at 6.10 and upwards.
Average price paid for fed steers last
week here was only slightly below
average for the best week this year,
but was 80 cents per cwt. higher
than the average for this period dur- j
iDg past ten years. At this time
year ago prices were going up fast,
and were slightly above present range |
Packers claim the outlet is not very
good for the beef, but on the other I
hand, demand continues sufficient to
absorb present volume of receipts at I
firm prices. Total cattle receipts
here for March show an increase of |
about 8 per cent over March last year,
and will be heaviest on record for!
Marc! at this point, approximately
165,000 head, not Including8000 calves
Heifers bring 4 00 to 6.20, cows 3 25 to j
5 75, bulls 3 20 to 4.80, calves 3.75 to
7.50, Stockers 4.00 to 5.35, feeders 4.75 f
to 5.65.
Hog receipts last week were 70,0001
head here, and the market closed the |
week 15 to 20 cents above close of pre-
vious week. The run today Is 120001
head, market steady to 5 lower, heavy
hogs at 6.80 to 6 95, medium weights I
6.70 to 6.90, welnhts below 200tt. 8.40
to 6 60, pigs 5 00 to 6 00. There was a
good demand from killers in the east
last week, and orders east of Illinois
will likely be strong factor In the
market for some time, as that terri-1
tory is comparatively bare of hogs
The total for the month will exceed
any previous March at this market I
