Republican County Committeeman
Resigns—Scores Frantz’s
Attitude.
Sulphur. I.T., August 20.—Special.
—Declaring that lie favors immediate
statetiood and that to aid in assuring
the adoption of the constitution and
ttie enactment of consistent laws
thereunder he intends to vote for its
known friends, J. P. Lockwood, re-
publican county committeeman lias
resigned. In his letter making known
this plan of action he declares that
Frank Frantz will never be governor
again except by appointment, and
scores him for “at least winking at
the doubtful proceedings of the Tulsa
convention.”
Mr. Lockwood says:
“Dr. W. IT. Powell,
Chairman Republican County
Committee,
Palmer, Indian Ter.
Dear Sir:
"I herewith tender you my resigna-
tion as county committeeman and
oiler my reasons therefor:
“(1.) I am for the proposed consti
tution, first, last and all the time (a),
because to be for It Is to stand for
statehood, and (b), to oppose it means
to advocate indefinite prolongation of
present chaotic local conditions.
“(2.) I desire to live and act for
and witli the common people: and to
do this must support the proposed
constitution. For it is more in their
interest than anything ever promul-
gated. It may smack of Bryanism,
but be it so. It lias enougli Itoosevelt-
ism encouched in it to pass muster—
never doubt.
“(3.) I desire not to be charged
with the inconsistency of voting for
a governor, while at the same time
trying to defeat that by which only
the office can exist.
“Frank Frantz may be governor
but never of the new state. He has
at least so winked at the doubtful
proceeding of the Tulsa convention as
not to be understood by his friends
who are also ardent friends of state
hood. He may be governor by appoint-
<nent(which is doubtless the utmost
of his expectation), but this appoint-
ing business is the very system whicli
the thoughtful and patriotic people
have spent years in an etfort to elimi-
nate. I have no constitutions—nor
principles, if you please—to exchange
for a governor.
"Therefore, in order to make as
sure as possible of the constitution,
and of the enactment of consistent
laws thereunder, I shall vote with
and for its friends,—ITS KNOWN
FRIENDS, not making a single ex-
ception.”
The Republicans, we are told, have
nominated Wes. Warnock for trustee
of Manchester township against J. O.
Cromwell. Wes. is a good fellow, but
he Is going up against a good man and
one who has made an excellent trustee.
As trustee Mr. Cromwell has done a
great deal in the way of road and
bridge work. About 15 miles of road
have been graded with a grader under
his supervision, and more culverts
have been put in than ever before in
the history of the township. Again,
arrangements are now made and have
been for a long time, for the grading
of several miles of road south of town,
the work on which will be commenced
as soon as the busy season is over and
help can be had to do it. In addition
to this Mr. Cromwell has made a good
assessor, and the people generally are
satisfied with his work. The Journal
don’t believe the people will turn him
down, even if the Republicans have a
good man running against him.
