San Francisco is an ideal summer re-I
sort, weather always cool.
Trip thither In summer across high ]
table lands of New Mexico and Arizona is
pleasant—air bracing, no oppressive
heat or dust.
Best way to go Is via the Santa Fe

personally conducted excursions.
On the way visit Indian pueblos and
petrified forest, also the Grand < anon of

cle. now easily accessible.
See Southern California—its noted r<v-
sort hotels, idyllic valleys, majestic
mountains, smooth 1 leaches and lovely
islands. Its old mlssion*.,its semi-tropic
fruits and flowers, its great oil wells.
This important section reached via the
Santa Fe Iterate cheaper than most other
lines and with greater comfort.
Extremely low round trip rates: liberal

turning; open to every body. All ticket
agents sell via Santa tv Route. Descrip-

Claud Duval, commercial man,
headquarters, Hutchinson, Kansas,
was doing business in Manchester
Monday and Tuesday. Claud is the
man that made the race against
Chester 1. Long for congress in thu
Hig Seventh Kansas district last
year. He lias the honor of leading
the fusion ticket in every county in
tho district, and deservedly so. Mr.
Duval is one of tho cleanest, best
men in the state of Kansas, and will
.vet be heard in the councils of the
ruling powers of state and nation, for
a man the equal of Claud Duval in
morality, integrity and ability can
not be kept down. He has been one
of our valued patrons these many
years and we are glad to note Ids
successes. Notwithstanding his de-
feat, for congressman, he lias instilled
himself in the minds of the people,
tDeir well wishes being with him in
anything lie undertakes, which is
wortli more than any oltlce.
—An even half dozen dry looking
old maids from Harper, Kansas, came
up from Medford on the freight Fri-
day. The caboose was full of human
beings as was every shady corner on
the train. Tho conductor touk up
the tickets, smiling at eacli female
passenger in turn. lie put no tags
in their hats, trusting to memory to
discover new additions to his list of
passengers. Arter passing several
stations lie started around again,
scrutinizing every one very closely to
discover any that might lie riding
without paying. lie reached one of
tiie ancient ladies, looked at her
squarely a moment, and then “Stop
that making goo goo eyes at me"
Mirilly broke I lie monotonous roar of
the train. The con gut red in tiie
face and the crowd yelled.
—The Journal was in error last
week in stating tiiat E. F. llacon had
received a car load of ice. We were
informed it would be here, but fiom
some cause it did not come, and the
principal Ice users in Manchester
have been put to much inconvenience
and expense in getting ice, being re-
quired iu make local shipments from
Anthony and Wakita, where ice is
kept in abundance nearly all the time.
Several different parties are talking
of putting up an ice house next fall
with a view to supplying the trade
next summer with the natural prod-
uct and also shipments of artilicial
ice.
—We call attention to the column
advertisement of the iSaffold Mercan-
tile Co. in this paper. Dr. Saifold
lias fitted up the finest business room
in Manchester—100 teet deep—and is
adding many new lines of goods. He
began with a small stock of drugs and
by attention to business and the free
use of printer's ink is building up a
department store that would do
credit to a much larger town. You
will hear from this store quite often,
as a column space in tiie Journal
has been contracted fur a year, thus
making the Satfuld Mercantile Co.
the best advertising patron wc have.
—Adam Schwarz is u friend of Ko-
runa and kept a bottle sotting by Ids
bed Wednesday night, liy mistake a
turpentine buttle was placed by the
side of tiie Perunn, and when Thurs-
day morning came he reached over
and getting hold of 11- wrong bottle,
took a big swallow ><f turpentine, lie
experienced no serious results, but
says be felt queer for several hours
and sweat “like a nigger at election.'
—Manchester lias the best water
facilities of any town of it- size in
this part of the country. The qual-
ity is good and the quantity suffic-
ient for all demands that may be
made upon it. When looking for a
location the water question is one of
t he most important to bo considered.
A town without water is a very un-
desirable place in which to live.
—The dry weather lias about done
up the corn crop, but with the tine
wheat crop the farmers can stand it
and are making very littleconinlaint-.
The drouth is even worse in Missouri
and parts of Iowa. Illinois and
Nebraska, where they depend almost
wholly on corn, and the farmers in
those states have many hardships
staring them in tiie face.
—Definitions for “moutll.’’ Tile

your liver. Patriotism's fountain.
Tool chest, for pic. Tiie grocer's best

— Mrs. Long, daughter of Wm.
Banks, who died recently, is here
from Baldwin. Iowa, to settle up her
father's estate. She says the corn
crop in tiie locality where she lives
in Iowa is worse burned by drouth
than it is in Oklahoma or Kansas.
—On and after April 1st I wiil have
on exhibition a complete steam
threshing outfit. Also second hand
rigs for sale. I have everything run-
ning every Saturday and any day if
requested a day before.

—Tiie Star restaurant is now using

cream, and keeps a supply on hand
all the time. Simmons Bros, strive
to keep the best of every thing.
— Win. McClurg of Medford was
here this week and let tho contract
to J. G. Jefferies for the building of
a residence and lodging house 24x20
feet, two stories high, with six sleep-
ing rooms above and four rooms
below, on the lots one block north of
the Star restaurant. The building
is much needed in Manchester and
will bo put op at once.
-O. W. Plunkett and wife,'accom-
panied by their sons, J. R. and W. E.
Plunkett, left Thursday via Anthony
and the Missouri Pacific for a
month's visit at their old home near
New Richmond, Indiana. The Plun-
ketts are highly respected people in
t Ids community and having earned a
vacation we hope, they will enjoy it.
Roy Heudrixsun will look after af-
fairs on their farms while they arc-
absent.
—The 5-year-oid son of Mr. Frank
James of Jefferson foil into a 20-loot
well Saturday evening wildcat play.
Mrs. Charles Hruttain, who witnessed
the disappearance of tiie child, ran to
the rescue. Siie procured a long
ladder, let it down in tiie well, di-
seended and in a very few seconds
emerged with the little fellow, who
aside from a slight bruise on tiie head
sustained by encmint- ring the wall
in the descent, was uninjured alt ho
badly scared. Such bravery and
presence of mind as that displayed
iiy Mrs. Iirattain is not often found
in women.—Medford Daily Mail.
— Since July 10 flic 13 saloons in El
Reno have’sold not iess than 2000
half barrels, 102,000 bottles of beer.
At a rough cstimat this is 000,000
glasses of beer in 15’days. The
amount of whisky and other drinks
consumed was large, but it would be
difficult to estimate it by glasses.
The wholesale supply depots of lead-
ing breweries were each two days
without beer, which brings the
period of consumptiou down to 13
day®, including Sunday. Freight
traffic on the railroads was so great
that it was impossible to get beer
delivered. Much beer was delivered
by express. Notwithstanding this
enormous consumption of intoxicants
there was little public drunkenness
aDd few saloon brawls. The weather
ha- been so hot that men could dcink
and lose the effects through perspir-
ation. Had the weather been cold it
is certain that tights would have been
numerous.—K. C. Star.
—Every train leading towards El-
Reno has been loaded to the guards
since July 10, the first day of regis-
tration. Tiie Journal's prediction
or three weeks ago that the railroads
would be tiie winners lias proven to
be correct. The more people that
go to register the bigger tho profits
of the railroads and smaller tho
chance for the well intentioned home
seeker. Tiie town of El Rena is reap-
ing a harvest such as mighty few
towns experience. Towns along the
route are well represented by venders
of eatables at the depots and the
quality is much better than that
which you.get in Eilteno. The town
