strongly emphasized. The news-

order houses have done an im-
mense business in chesp adulter-
ated and misbranded food pro-
ducts. Under the new national
food law they will find it impossi-
aible to handle any but pure goods
and there is every reason to be-
lieve that they can not profitably
do this. There has been a grow-
ing agitation against the mailord-
er business all over the country,
both on the part of the country
merchant and the country press,
and the news of Sears, Roebuck
& Company’s withdrawal from
the grocery field will be good
news as far as it goes. Numer-
ous people, especially farmers,
have patronized the grocery de-
partment of the firm, and it has

smaller communities. The Ban-

Success in Idaho.
E. R. Gooding, governor of
Idaho, aaya:
••Woman's suffrage has proven
to be a complete success in the
state of Idaho. My eaperlence
in Idaho politics was considera-
ble prior to the adoption of the
amendment granting the right of
suffrage to women, and I am con-
seqently in a position to state
that the right of suffrage has been
of extraordinary influence in polit-
ical affairs in this state.
“I feel that in no state in the
Union are political affairs more
cleanly conducted. The women
citizens of the state take practi-
cally the same interest in politics
here as do their brother citizens,
and the woman vote is propor-
tionately as large as the man vote
at each election. In consequence
of this activity, Idaho at each
election has better candidates for
office, the legislature has passed

Men, Women and the World.
Municipal suffrage has been
granted to women in Natal. South
Africa.
The National Grange at its re-
cent annual meeting in Denver,
passed a resolution in favor of
woman suffrage by a unanimous
vote.
Louisiana has enacted a law
which permits cities of over io,-
ooo inhabitants to appoint women
factory inspectors. The mayor
of New Orleans has appointed
Miss Jean Gordon as inspector
for that city. Miss Gordon has
taken a prominent part in civic
movement and is peculiarly well
qualified for the position.
The National Synod of Norway
has recently voted by a large ma-
jority to give women equal rights
with men in the government of
the church.
The Denver Post quotes Fred-
erick E. Smutzer, secretary of the
better laws, and the enforcement
of the laws has been more rigid
than in surrounding states.”
The business man who uses
stationery printed by the Signal-
Star’s job printing department has

Nothing but the best work turned
