TAFT HOME AT LAST.
New York. Dec. 20. — William H.
Taft, secretary of war. returned to-
day from his trip around the world,
bringing renewed assurance of
Japan's friendliness toward the Uni-
ted States, but declining to say any-
thing with respect to the political
situation in this country. He said
that he had been too long out of in-
timate touch with political affairs at
home to discuss them in any way.
One of Mr. Taft's interviewers had
the temerity to ask:
“Well. Mr. Secretary, tp'l us who
is your choice for president.’’
Amid general laughter, in which he
heartily joined, the secretary re-
plied:
"I guess I will have to leave that
to inference "
Mr. Taft, left for Washington on an
early afternoon train, saying that ac-
cnmulafed»matters in the war de-
partment would keep his nos» to the
official grindstone for some time to
come and that preparation of his
special report on the Philippines,
which would be in hook form, would
also r°ouire much of his time in the
near future.

Sheer white goods, in fact, any fine
wash goods when new, owe much of
their attractiveness to the way they
are laundered, this being done in a
manner to enhance their textile beau-
ty. Home laundering would be equal-
ly satisfactory if proper attention was
given to starching, the first essential
being good Starch, which has sufficient
strength to stiffen, without thickening
the goods. Try Defiance Starch and
you will be pleasantly surprised at the
improved appearance of your work.
Post Card Petition.
The National Syndicate of Railway-
men in France has adopted a novel
method of petitioning the president of
the senate in favor of a measure
which has been waiting Its turn for
ten years. It has .had 400,000 post
cards printed and distributed to its
members, with a request that they be
signed and forwarded. Correspondence
addressed to the president of the sen-
ate does not need to be stamped.
Not a Reftjrmer.
“I should think you could easily
show the errors of your political op-
ponents.”
“Perhaps." answered Senator Sorg-
hum, “but if 1 should convince them j
they would simply adopt my sugges-
tions without giving me any credit for
them. The opposition's mistakes are
a part of m.v capital.”
