Tried to Avoid Storm.
When the Chanzy sailed from this
port, according to the details reach-
ing here. Instead of heading direct for
Algiers, she bugged the coast as far
as Barcelona In order to avoid the
storm, and finally ran under the shel-
ter of the Islands of Minorca and Ma-
jorca. The engines broke down, how-
ever. and the vessel was rendered
powerless. The storm hurled her
against the rocks on the north coast
of the Island of Minorca. In the vicini-
ty of Clededalfa. and she went down
almost Immediately. The sole survi-
vor. Marcel Rodel, brought the news
to Palma.
Captain Was Confident.
According to the steamship com-
pany's sailing list, the steamer Mare-
rhal Bugeaud should have sailed on
Wednesday, hut was replaced by the
Chanzy. Many passengers booked lot
Algiers had waited to go by the
Chanzy. because of the great confi-
dence in her captain.
The French line authorities say they
have hopes that some of the passen
gers have escaped and landed on other
parts of the Island of Minorca.
The Chanzy is a total wreck. Steam-
ers have been despatched from Spain j
and from points in the Balearic is-
lands to the scene of the catastrophe.
Among the victims was the cele-
brated Parisian music hall singer.
Francis Dufor. as well as other promi-
nent music hall favorites.
It is now believed three American
vaudeville players from San Francisco
were on board the steamer. Their
names are Elsie Henry and Messrs.
Dronda and Delyum.
The French consul at Cludadels re-
ports that large numbers of bodies
are floating at sea, but that the storm
continues .making impossible their re-
covery.

RAW ECZEMA ON HANDS
“I had eczema on my hands for ten
years. I had three good doctors but
none of them did any good. I then
used one box of Cuticura Ointment
and three bottles of Cuticura Resolvent
and was completely cured. My hands
were raw all over, inside and out, and
the eczema was spreading all over my
body and limbs. Before I had used one
bottle, together with the Cuticura
Ointment, my sores were nearly
healed over, and by the time I had
used the third bottle, I was entirely
well. To any one who has any skin
or blood disease I would honestly ad-
vise them to fool with nothing else,
but to get Cuticura and get well. My
hands have never given me the least
bit of trouble up to now.
“My daughter's hands this summer
became perfectly raw with eczema.
She could get nothing that would do
them any good until she tried Cuti-
cura. She used Cuticura Resolvent
and Cuticura Ointment and in two
weeks they were entirely cured. I
have used Cuticura for other members
of my family and it always proved suc-
cessful. Mrs. M. E. Falin, Speers
Ferry, Va., Oct 19. 1909."
For Shame, Mr. Staggers.
“Our splendid cook left to-day and I
had to take her place,” said Mrs. Stag-
gers. "1 hope I shall be successful in
imitating her.”
"I certainly hope you will be suc-
cessful in following in her footsteps,"
suggestively remarked old man Stag-
gers a-a he chewed on a crisp-boiled
potato.
Deafness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, aa they cannot reach the dis-
eased portion ot the ear. There Is only one way to
Hire deafness, and that Is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness Is caused by an inflamed condition of tha
mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this
tube is l.iflamed you have a rumbling sound or im-
perfect hearlne. and when it is entirely closed, Deaf-
oess is the result, and unless the inflammation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its normal cond I
lion, hearliu; will be destroyed forever; nine cases
out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which Is nothing
but an Inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of
Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured
by Hail’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free. i
