Hudson, N. Y.—Masked men sprang
out of (ho bushes along-sidt- a lonely
lane and held up Dent Fowler, the
aged paymaster of the Atlas Brick
company, and George Ragsdale, hi*
negro driver, shot the driver dead,
mortally wounded Fowler, and rau off
wlih a valise containing f.I.OoO.
Fowler died a few hours later. Sat-
urday is |ay day at the yards of the
Atlas Ih’lck company, and according
to custom Fowler called at a New-
burgh hank for his pay money, sorted
It out into the proper amounts, tick-
eted the money and started to drive
hack to the yards a half mile out of
town. He went armed, ami for further
protection took with him Ragsdale,
who was stable boss at the yards.
Although the shooting occurred
within :iOO yards of the state firemen'*
home, and within sight of the yards,
it was neither seen nor heard. The
police have to piece together a the-
ory of the crime from bullet hole* and
foot-prints. Five shot* were fired,
l’wo of them took away Ragsdale's
head. A third struck the paymaster
lbove the heart. The fourth and fifth
passed through the hack of the raised
buggy top. From the size of the hole*
It would appear that the robbers used
regulation army .44 caliber revolvers.
From the floot-prints there seem to
nave been five in the band.
The holdup and the Bhooting must
have followed each other almost with
he rapidity of the shots themselves,
it can he seen that somebody grabbed
the horse’s bridle. If a demand for
the paymaster's box was made, he
never had time to refuse or comply.
There Is no evidence that he attempt-
ed to defend himself.

TRIBUTE TO “JIM” HURLEY.
President Ripley and Full Directorate
Mourn With Shop Employes.
Topeka.—Amid hearts laden with
sorrow and eyes dimmed with tears
the body of the late James K. Hurley,
general manager of the Atchison, To
peka & Santa Fe Railway Company,
was laid to its final rest here Satur-
day. Interment was at Topeka ceme-
tery.
Never before was such a tribute paid
to a Kansas man. Not only did the
people of Topeka suspend their busi-
ness and attend the obsequies, but the
entire Santa Fe railway system from
( liicagn to California absolutely
< eased work of all kinds for five min-
utes as a mark of respect. From 5:30
lo 5:35 p. m., just as the body was
lowered to Its grave, every employe
of the system stopped his work. Not
a train moved anywhere. This is the
first time in its history that the Santa
Fe ever ordered such a tribute.
The floral decorations and tributes
were the most numerous and elabor-
ate ever seen in Topeka. There were
carloads of flowers. They came from
Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles,
Kansas City, Denver, Wichita, Galves-
ton and practically every large town
and division point on the i'nes of the
Santa Fe.

Aviator Sets a New Record.
Deauville, France.—Leon Moranf,
the French aviator, has broken the
world's record for altitude held by
himself, reaching a height of 8,471
feet. The aviator had a narrow es-
cape from death, the motor of hi*
machine stopping suddenly when the
highest point was reached.
The previous altitude record was
7.034 feet, made by Morant at Havre
recently.
Just when the aviator reached his
highest mark the motor of the ma-
chine suddenly stopped, after which
the monoplane began a long and re-
markable plane toward the earth. The
machine plunged downward at a great
rate and reaehed the ground a dis-
tance of two kilometers (1.14) miles
from the airdome. The huge crowd
gathered on the aviation field saw
Morant planing downward with fright-
ful rapidity and It was feared that
the aviator had met with an acci-
dent.
Morant was found dazed, but not
hurt, holding a barometer la bis htn4
HOW A DOCTOR CURED SCALP
DISEASE
"When I was ten or twelve years
old I had a scalp disease, something
like scald head, though it wasn't that.
I suffered for several months, and
most of my hair came out Finally
they had a doctor to see me and he
recommended the Cuticura Remedies.
They cured me In a few weeks. I
have used the Cuticura Remedies, also,
for a breaking out on my hands and
was benefited a great deal. I haven't
had any more trouble with the scalp
disease. Miss Jessie F. Buchanan,
R. F. D. 3, Hamilton, Ga., Jan. 7, 1909."
Kept with Barnum’s Circus.
P. T. Barnum, the famous circus
man, once wrote: “I have had the
Cuticura Remedies among the con-
tents of my medicine chest with my
show s for the last three seasons, and I
can cheerfully certify that they were
very effective in every case which
called for their use."
Something Dreadful.
Wee Anita was listening to a story
of the Johnstown flood.
"What made It?" she asked.
"Oh, the dam broke," replied grand-
ma.
The next morning she ran into her
brother's room and, climbing up on
the bed. Inquired anxiously: "Buvver,
wasn't It just drefful 'bout that swear
breaking and killing all dose people?”

Talking to ths Child.
"Mrs. X- talks to little Madge
just as Mr. X-talks to their dog,"
saltl a little girl of a neighboring fam
lly. And it was Indeed true. Mrs.
X- is u very well meaning woman
and would he greatly surprised If she
should hear the foregoing statement.
She has aim ply unconsciously acquired
a harsh tone of voice In dealing with
her children This Is altogether un-
necessary and Is not, as many moth-
er* seem to think, a mark of good dls
clpllne. The mother whose manner Is
quiet hut firm 's generally a much
more successful disciplinarian than
the harsh-voiced mother who Issues
her couimund* In a dictatorial manner.
Kindness never *|>oils children. It is
flabby indecision, sometimes mistaken
for kindness, which spoils them.
Opportunity of 8uffragist.
Baroness Aletta Korff tell* in one
of the magazines how the women of
Finland came to vote. The fact is
that women had to show that they
could meet an emergency before the
vote came to them. They have not
had many opportunities to take the
Initiative in the world's history and
they have not always responded when
the opportunity cam<>, hut when a
crisis, such as that In 1904, when the
strike and the revolutionary outbreak
In Russia took place at the same time,
occurred, they proved they could
make peace by doing it. Not until
England and the United States find
the women helping them to hear some
great trouble will they give them the
right tervote.
When the Fieh Exploded.
Somebody discovered that fish are
fond of gasoline, and this led to the
Idea of soaking worms in gasoline in
order to make them more alluring
when used for bait.
Mark the result.
Two of those gasoline-tempted fish
exploded In the frying pan, and broko
the kitchen window, and blew the
cook's face full of mashed potuto, and
hurled the teakettle Into the flour
barrel, and painted the kitchen celling
with stewed tomatoes.
Call It a lying world and let it go at
that.
