SENATE WILL STAND PAT.
Washington, March. 21.-The friends
of free homes have not abandoned hope
that senate amendment will be favor-
ably acted upon, it wa9 announced
this morning that Speaker Reed has se-
lected as the conferees on the part of I
the bouse of representatives* Sherman, ‘
ol New York, chairman of the house
committee on Indian affairs; Represen-
tative Curtis, ot Kansas, and Represen-
tative Little of Arkansas. Sherman
and Curtis are opposed to the amend-
ment and Little is in favor of it. The
senate conferees have not yet been
named. It was reported that two of
uiem would be Senators Pettigrew and
Nelsi n. Both are supporters of the
free homes amendment, and it is said
that they will hold out for agreement
to it by the house to the extent, it nec-
essary, of making it a senate issue. If
this course is pursued, in the event of
the house conferees refusing to recede
from the position of non concurrence,
the Indian appropriation bill may fad
of passage before the end of this sea
8ion* It Is believed by some members
of the house that the amendment may
be so amended in conference as to pro
tact the agricultural colleges by pro-
of three months in the fall—that
they may not suffer from cold*
