This Differences.
Chicago, Illinois —William I). Mahon
president of the International Street
Car Men’s union, who is expected here
to take charge of the threatening
street railway situation, Is depended
upon by the locrl union leaders and by
the officials of the railway companies
to bring permanent peace to the dis-
puting factions.
The companies are determined to
make no further concessions.
Before a strike Is called, Mahon, un-
der the constitution of his organiza-
tion, must attempt to settle the mat-
ters in dispute, and, falling this, he
must call on the general executive
board of the organization to sanction a
strike. Local leaders still feel that an
amicable settlement will be had.

The Star and the Eureka laundries,
the only ones in town, were burned. A

Cheap Rates From Kansas.
Kansas Ci'.y, Missouri—indepanden:
action by the Chicago, Rock Island &
Pacific rallioad may result In cheap
rates from Kansas for the fall fes-
tivities. The passenger agents met in
Chicago and turned down a proposal
to grant reduced fares from Kansas,
Colorado and Nebraska. But the Rock
Island took Independent action and
has announced a rate of 1^ fare for
the round trip from points in Kansas
within 200 miles of Kansas City. The
other lines probably will meet this
rate.

Starch were used. In order to get the
desired stiffness, It Is usually neces-
sary to use so much starch that the
beauty and fineness of the fabric Is
hidden behind n paste of varying
thickness, which not only destroys the
appearance, but also affects the wear-
ing quality of the goods. This trou-
ble can be entirely overcome by using
Defiance Starch, aa It can be applied

A Methodist bishop was recently a
guest at the home of a friend who had
two charming daughters. One morn-

two young ladles, went out In the hope
of catching some trout. An old fisher-

ing to appear friendly, called out:
"Ketcbln' many, pard?”
The blrhop, straightening himself
to his full height, replied: “Brother,

Wadding Fee In Installments.
Some of the 'squires In rustic New
lersey seem to be pretty hard pushed
for cash. To get the cash they do not
hesitate to use most unusual methods
One of these J. P.'s advertised the
other day that he was ready and will-
ing to marry couples at any time, day
or night, for a consideration of $5 and
that he was willing to accept $1 In
cash down and the rest in weekly In-
stallments of $1 until the fee of $.">
was paid up. The very night after the
first appearance of this advertisement
the J. P. referred to was called upon
to “make good” his bluff. Shortly after
midnight a couple which had come In
an automobile awaksped him from bis
sleep and asked to be married under
the Installment plan offered In the
advertisement. And the J. P. was
game and made good.

Measuring Brains.
The cephalic index of old Athenians
was a wee, wee bit better than ours.
Cephalic Index means volume of brain.
It Is found by filling a skull with peas
and then measuring them. Ancient
Athenians have a few peas on us. The
Greeks never lusted bloodshed like
the Romans and some of us moderns.

Sheer white goods, in fact, any fine
wash goods when new, owe much of
their attractiveness to the way they
are laundered, this being done In a
manner to enhance their textile beau-
ty. Home laundering would be equal-
ly satisfactory If proper attention was
given to starching, the first essential
being good Starch, which has sufficient
strength to stiffen, without thickening
the goods. Try Defiance Starch and
you will be pleasantly surprised at the
Improved appearance of your work.
