•OMI POLITICS BREWING
CUjr politics are warming up for
ftks apiing election. and favorites are
Springing up in every direction. The
Messenger has not been retained by
any of them as yet to sing their vir-
tues to the world, but we understand
through hearsay that there is to be
Mvsral candidate s for the various of-
fices.
Friends o' the present mayor are
trying to force him into the race,
While J. Hyatt and J. Herbert Moore
are also prominently mentioned for
the place.
The main fight of course will lie
over the position of chief of police
M It always is. Why is it that one
of the poorest paying positions Is al-
ways the most coveted, when the
position caries long hours, some risk
snd lots of cussing? For this position
the democrats have three men now-
on the avowed list, lien Matthews,
the present ineumbrent, is a candi-
date, and Miles Patton, former de-
puty under Sherff Stephens, is also
a candidate. Matthews will be back-
ed by the Leach faction of democrats
and Patton will receive tlie Stephens
faction. Hud Trail expects to be a
candidate for the republican end of
the race.
For council and school board tile
candidates are a little slow, but will
be put out in due course of time.
There is a determlnned effort being
made to get a council named again
who will ateml to the duties of the
Office and keep the expense down
as the past council has done.
The school b.jard will be nominated
by wards in the coining election, but
elected by the town at large. There
will be one director from each ward
and one from the outlying district. A
scrap will probably be made over
these directors, as politics in the
school is a foregone conclusion here
now since it was first originated some
two or three years ago.

Residents of Oklahoma may soon
be forced to diet on corn bread. The
rapidity with which prices of wh eat
are advancing and the alleged scar-
city of tlie crop on hand lead local
millers to believe that in manufac-
turing flour they will be forced to
abandon wheat and resort to corn.
Frank O. Jones sales manager of
the Oklahoma City Mill and Elevator
■ompany, says there is not enough
•\li at on hand in tills state to oper-
ate the mills, and that a crisis is
likely in the near future. It is un-
likely he says, that wheat can be
exported from other communities be-
a'.ise of the high prices demanded,
and also because there is a scarcity
on tlie market.
Kansas, Mr. Jones states, has not
mough at present to operate Its mills,
The only outlet, he believes, is the
■substitution of corn. The latter pro-
duct is much cheaper, but does not
uak. as good bread as does wheat.
The present situation, Jones says,
is due to many of the farmers hold-
ing their crop In anticipation of high
1 rices,, and to the extraordinary de-
mand for export caused by the
European war. In one day, he de-
i lares 1,000,000 bushels were export -
d to Europe.
Local * housewives are warned by
decrease in about the same propor-
tion. Even with a war tax when Ve
have no war the receipts are not
large enough and in another year
tho feat of the Cleveland adminis-
tration of Issuing bonds in time of
peace will have to be resorted to or
else some other twist In the tax Idea
must be brought to hear to raise the
money that Is shy on account of the
tariff or rather for lack of a proteo
tive tariff.
Theoretically the democrats may
be right about the protective tariff
being wrong, but somehow the coun
try gets up against it as soon as the
tariff Is taken off.
