Havana, Janury 28.—Further de-
tails reguarding the killing of Nes-
tor Aranguren, the insurgent Brig-
adier General, known as The Sher-
idan of Cuba, have been received.
They show that Col. Araneabe of the
Spanish forces, had known for some
time that Aranguren was in the habit
of visiting hia mistress in a hot in
the Tapsste hills, and the day before
yesterday he ordered thme columns
of troops, re-enforced by cavalry, to
surprise the insurgent chief, with
the result that the later was shot and
killed with one of hie companions.
The troops also captured two womeu
and the father of Aranguren’s mis-
tress, who is described as being the
dynamiter of the band.
About 4000 persons have visited
the morgue, where the body of Ar-
anguren lies exposed, among them
being many women and the uncle of
the deceased. The remains were
identified by the Fire Department,
several officers, a number of firemen
as well as relatives.
Zt is said that the •mistress of Ar-
anguren and another woman, who
was captured, have cinoe died of
their injuries.
Aranguren, it is now stated, was
shot whfle he was writing, The re-
mains of Aranguren will be quietly
buried to day.
The Spanish authorities say that
among the papets which fell into the
hattds of the troops when Aranguren
was killed were his diary, showing
itbat he ordered the execution of
Lieut. Col. Ruii.
There is considerable comment in
different eircules here at the fact
which is now being pointed
out that nearly all the insurgent
Chiefs of the province of Havana
have been killed owing to their visit-
mg their mistresses.
Another fact is being commented
upon considerably in social circles is
«that the Bieop of Havana has visit-
ed all the secietariee of the autono-
mous government, while, although
two weeks have elapsed since he did
so, the secretaries have not returned
hia visit.
