ALTUS,
OKU
AT MANGUM!
The Town Prospering, People Happy end
Contented, and Buiinen in Boom-
ing Bight Along.
The publishers of the Times, iu
company with J. B. Willeford, of
Olustee, made a business trip to
Maugum Suuday afternoon, re-
turning iu the midst of a fearful
dust storm Monday afteruoou.
We fouud the county town iu
good shape, its business enter-
prises prospering, and its people
ooutented aud happy. While
there has uot beon a great deal of
building going ou iu the past
year, plaus are being made for
several uew structures this spring
aud summer, which will be a
J rent improvement to the towu.
laugum has a handsome Com-
mercial Club room where she en-
tertaius her visitors iu royal style
and makes them feel at home.
Altus would do well to copy her
in this respect. She also has a
spleudid hotel-the HarriB house,-
where the best the market affords
is set before the guests, who sleep
iu cleau, comfortable beds, iu
apartments which are handsome-
ly aud tastefully furnished. The
editor attended church also, (now
don't think we're falsifying, for
it's the truth) aud listened to an
excellent sermon by Rev. Simms.
One amusiug feature of our visit
was the argumeut of some of the
towu's good but misguided citi-
zens, who gooduaturedly but
vainly tried to convert us to the
new court hou«e theory, aud to
couvince us that county division
was a visionary, impracticable
scheme which would never be
realized. We had this kind of
conversation hauded to us ou
every corner. We fouud the land
office grinding away, with Bros.
Oliphant and Trotter at the helm
and bad a very pleasant visit
with the whole force. The wind
aud dust coming home was some-
thing awful, and agaiu we were
thankful that we don't live so
close to a dry river bed that we
catch all the sand aud dirt that
blows. Everybody seemed glad
to see us, and all exerted them-
selves to make us have a pleasant
time, and we left with kindly
feelings toward the good people
of the county town.
HARD TO CATCH!
Jim Ealum Beat Deputy Sheriff Turney
to Mangum, But Turney Game
Out Even Anyhow.
Frank Perkins, the youug man
who was arrested at Vernon
charged with robbing the Bone-
brake-Hightower Co., is slowly
but surely "turning up" every
gambler iu Altus whom he "sat
iu" with. Every few days he
disgorges sufficient luformation
to secure a conviction, and down
comes a warrant to Deputy Sher-
iff Turney to be served immedi-
ately. Several of the boys have
already made trips tu the county
towu and contributed various
sums to the county exchequer,
all'ou the evideuce of Perkins.
The chances are if that mau ever
returns to Altus he will find a
warm reception awaiting him,
from a certain class, at least.
A funny thing happened Mon-
day, wheu a young man who was
"wauted" rau a race with Turney
and beat him to Maugum, thus
depriving the officer of his fees iu
the case. Turuey had had a
warrant for Jim Ealum, who
lives four miles west, since
March 22, but had no opportun-
ity of serving it until Monday,
wheu he started after Ins man.
Meanwhile, somebody had posted
Ealum, aud when Jim reached
the house he fouud that his bird
had already started for the couu-
ty towu ahead of him to pay his
flue. Not a bit] discouraged by
the information, Turuey drove to
the home of Beu Walker, south-
west of Old Frazier, aud served a
warrant for gambling ou him,
taking him to Maugum. Walker
waa convicted aud Jim got his
fees. so his trip was worth while,
eveu if Ealum did beat him in
and pay his fine without an offi-
cers assistance.
It is said that Nelson has 86
warrants for gambling to serve iu
Altus alone. He seems to be
getting a move ou himselt and
doiug sometlnug to earn his sal-
ary-

Altus Band and Orchestra to Appear in
Blackface and So Stunts In a
Minstrel Pertonnanoe.
The members of the AltuB
Baud aud Orchestra have decided
to depart from the time worn
regulation band concert and give
their friends and patrons some-
thing eutirely different, in au ef-
fort to wake the people up to the
fact that they need some money,
aud need it bad. A real, geuu-
iue old-time black face minstrel
has been decided on, with the
conveutioual "first-part'1' aud au
olio of specialty performances,
combinatiou musical Btuuts, aud
up-to-date novelties. The boys
have called in the assistance of
the best local talent, and promise
a show which will open r<he eyes
of the people to the gen uiue his-
trionic talent lying dorniaut and
undiscovered right here in their
midst.
Frank A. Singletary has taken
charge of the performance as
stage director, aud will devote
considerable of his time aud tal
ents to uiakiug it a success. Sin
gletary has had considerable ex-
perience iu this particular line,
having directed similar enter-
tainments at Bowie aud other
Texas poiuts while manager ot
opera houses, with greit success.
The boys have thrown themselves
heart and 9* >ul iuto the work, aud
are practiciug mightily for the
event.
The baud boys need the money
badly, aud they especially urge
the citizens aud their frieods to
patrouize this show liberally. It
takes lots of money to run a
baud, particularly when a direct-
or's salary must be paid promptly
at the first of each month. The
boys have also beeu at great ex-
pense iu buying new instruments,
music, etc., and they expect this
entertainment to pull them out
of their finaocial hole.
