Ed. Kennedy baa accompliabed
more than Locke baa iu two yeara.
But theu that bunch at Mangum
could n't succesafully fiuauce aud
oouatract t> hot tamale factory,
and yet they undertook to build
8520 jarda of railroad!
Let'a go to bed I
AN 0UT8IDE OPINION.
We haveu't a great deal of time
tc waste ou Mangum, but as cou
eidarable space in the Star of last
week is devoted to the Times we
waut to atep aside in our contest
for the county seat long euough
to drill a few facts into the gim
let head of the assinine pedagogue
who attempts to mislead his hand-
ful of readers with reference to
Altus and Altus affairs, Iu the
first place it is a well known fact
that Locke has been attempting
to build bis paper railroad on
wiudjamming aud hot air for two
years, aud has so far succeeded iu
grading two whole miles—3520
yards, or one-half the distance
around a section of laud—out of
Maugum, and the men who did
the actual work were williug to
trade their time checks for Mac-
gum poker checks and tobacco
tags auy old time. A good Sa-
maritan who was never known to
go wrong till he went to Mangum,
sacrificed his business in cashing
a lot of these hot air checks and
is now working at the bench at
his trade. And yet the Star has
the front to state that at no time
since these two whole miles were
graded could material be had for
"love or money." True, Col,
Locke coludu't get it, for it took
money, aud the 'colonel's princi-
pal asset being tied up iu a gall
factory finaucers were timid about
making advances on such col-
lateral. However, other rail-
roads have experienced no trouble
in getting all the material they
wanted, as evidenced iu the case
of the Orient. Locke's railroad
is nothing more nor less than a
hot air, paper proposition, and
the press at Mangum have de-
voted two years time iu trying to
deceive their readers about it.
And listen to this: "Mangum
was never afflicted with grafters
or hot air promoters, aud no
county was ever freer from debt,
boodhug and grafting than old
Greer was." Ye gods! Pull down
the blinds! No grafters or hot
air promoters in Mangum—that's
enough to make a hydrophobia
skunk bewail the loss of his pres-
tige. How did you work your
court house scheme? No graft in
that, eh? Of coarse not. Do
you think the people are fools,
Taylor? Do you think they have
forgotten the thousand and one
little contemptible annoyances;
the petty indiguities.the political
plots aud counter plots, the
grinding, galling teigu of the lit
tie coterie of self-constituted
bosses known as the "Mangum
gang," who ruled old Greer
oouuty with a rod of irou and
made the yoke ao utterly intoler-
able to a free people that they
were only too glad to go to house-
keeping for themselves as soou as
possible, which they did.
Taylor should be careful about
throwing brick bats, lest be shat-
ters some of hia owu wiudows.
The railroad from Altus to Hollis
is being houeatly and faithfully
built and your little flioga about
dodging hilla, big cats and grades
••mates from a habit which baa
become a aecond-natnn with Tay
By authority from the Govern-
or of Oklahoma we publish this
week a proclamation calling for
an election on Saturday, Juue 28,
to decide whether or not a lot of
disgruntled politicians who live
out aide of Greer county shall dic-
tate the scalpiug knife process
for the purpose of adding to Jack-
son couuty some of Greer's most
valuable territory. This election
ia to determine whether a lot of
dreamers are to manipulate coun-
ty affairs, or whether practical
aud commou-seuse policies are to
be pursued.
This plot was hatched in au
Olustee-Eldorado-Maugum hatch-
ery, where the only thing of mom-
ent was the re-location of the
county-seat of Jackson, and inci-
dentally so dividing our territory
that Hollis could never hope for
a further division of Greer couuty
aud the establishing of a county
with the Gate City as the county
sent. In the matter as to where
the seat of justice of Jackson
couuty is to be located we have
absolutely no interest. But when
gar.g of plotters get together
aud seek to invade our territory,
we do have something to say. We
do not believe this election will
carry, but that is a secondary
consideration. The fight is pri-
marily between Altus aud Olustee.
Altus has everything on her 6ide
—railroads, business enterprise,
population, location, wealth, acu-
men—and this Olustee is not slow
to see. But if Olustee can rake
off some of our choice domain,
her school teachers have figured
out that she will then be nearer
the centre ot the county—and
theu she begins to plot.
She learns that Loouey has
dreams of railroads, aud as prom-
ises are the least expensive thiugs
that can be invested in a county
seat fight, this fledgling political
bauty boasts that she will guaran-
tee to the thriving little town of
Loouey a railroad—and this with
an absolute knowledge that the
promise cannot be complied with.
Some of the Looney real estate
men, seeing the nice trap, and re-
alizing the tempting nature of the
bait, fall in with the scheme aud
join Olustee in the outrage. They
have forgotten that Altus worked
while they slept in making Jack-
son county possible. They forget
that Altus spent money with great,
liberality, was alive to every phase
of the situation, aud undertook
without trepidation and continued
without cessation every honorable
plan by which they might secure
the temple of justice. A petition
has been circulated iu the terri-
tory kuown to be favorable to the
county division Bcheme, and with
out conscience they have dared
'ithout any sense of shame to
slice off some of oar most valua-
ble territory aud ask that it be
attached to their county. And
those people who do not want to
leave Greer for a questionable ad-
vantage, and su unquestionable
iujury, are forced to take part in
one of the most cowardly elec
tiona a set of
roaded throufh legal
very day of the coaoty seat eleo«
tiou the couuty of Jaokaou votes
ou the reception of this territory
14 a part of their domain. And
thua the very thing which the
Oluatee gaugaought to aooompliah
will be defeated by the natural
order of eventa. 8o the people in
thia diatriot would uot be allowed
to aid tu aeleotiug the county aeat
after all 1
Will our people atand for it? It
will ouly bo a abort time till they
will ahow the little buuch of plot-
tera that they are uot merchaudiae
to be traded ou at will, aud they
will alao ahow how to forcibly re-
pudiate such "politics."—Hollia
Post-Herald.
Altus ia now in the lead for the
permanent county aeat for Jackaou
cjuuty.—Elmer Record.
That Truacott letter ia about
the limit. Oluatee ought to muz
zle Bro. Truscott, or at least cen
aor his stuff before it goes out.
Altus is now, and will be, the
couuty aeat of Jackson county,
when the smoke of the battle
clears away July 18.—Elmer Re-
cord.
A few more "explanatory arti-
cles" from the trenchaut pen of
Bro. Truscott, and the voters will
make it uuauimous for Altus.
Just keep ou writiug, brother.
Altus is the proper place for
the county seat, bo say the citi-
zens of the south and southeastern
part of the county, who are look-
iug at it from a business stand-
point.—Elmer Record.
That Altus is the logical place
for the Jackson county county-
seat there is no doubt, aud that
Hollis is the logical place for the
county seat of a new county cut
off in this section of the state
there can be no doubt. Even if
Olustee wins in this fight it will
ouly be a matter of time when the
couuty seat of Jackson county
will be permanently located at
Altus.—Hollis Post-Herald.
The Eldorado and Olustee pap-
ers contemptously reter to the
Altus politicians as "that Altus
gang." They imply in this that
Altus has been unduly active iu
working for her own interests.
Now these two towns are pursuing
the same policy which Altus has
pursued, aud are attempting
lower and dirtier policies thau
Altus attempted. Cau the pot
consistently call the kettle black?

CARLSBAD
Mineral Wells (Tex.) Water
at Home
A trip to Mineral wells is proper and nice for
those who can afford it, but there are hundreds of
people in and around Altus who are really unable to
bear such an expense, no matter how bad they need
the water. Here's where I come in.
1 have secured the agency for the famous Texas
Carlsbad Mineral Water, which is recognized as a
specific cure (for Rheumatism, Chronic Indigestion,
Kidney and Liver Troubles, all kinds of Stomach
Troubles, Bilious, Malarial and Typhoid Fever.
You will more than likely save suffering, expense,
or even death, by the use of this famous water. Don t
throw your money away on nauseating patent medi-
cine nostrums. Come in and get a case of this min-
eral water and then be happy. I have been a user
of this water for several years and 1 know what 1 am
talking about. It absolutely cured my wife of rheu-
tism in a treatment of six weeks.
Come in and let me explain it to you. I have
this water on sale at the Times office, Altus, Okla.,
at $3.00 per case.

Gov. Haskell made a wise
choice wheu be selected Marvin
Jones as dispensary agent for
Altus. Marvin did not waut the
job at all, and was only pre-
vailed upon to take it at the
earnest solicitation of the people.
But when Marvin deals out the
booze we'd like to see any mau
under the shiuiug suu get a drop
without fulfilling all the require-
ments of the law. Regulations
will be strictly enforced, you can
bet your last dollar on that.
Bro. Truscott roasts Altus peo-
ple, alleging that they are respon-
sible for the "crooked, zig-zag,
winding lines," then turnB right
around and uses those same liues
as an argument for locating the
cuunty seat at Olustee. Now,
wouldn't that cork you? What
were you writiug, Bro. Truscott,
au argument or au apology?
The Times has been almost
put out of business the past week
because of the damp weather.
Nothing on earth affects printers'
rollers so quickly as dampness,
aud until weather conditions get
right it is sometimes impossible
to turn a wheel. We notice that
other county papers suffered the
same way, especially the Olustee
Democrat. New rollers have
been ordered aud we hope to be
mach better off this week.
The Eldorado Courier is unnec-
essarily bitter against Altus aud
Altus people, and seeks to make
up for lack of argument iu favor
of Olustee aa the couuty seat, with
abuse, untruthful statements aud
ridicule. It won't work, Jim.
You'll have to give the voters
cold, hard, honest facts on this
question. They may read your
stuff aud laugh, but when the
time comes to cast their ballots
they will look to their own inter-
ests.
Olustee's couuty seat commit-
tee is seudiug out columns of the
Eldorado Courier's and their own
papers' abuse to the other journ-
als of the county, to be published
as advertising, hoping to win a
few poor votes by such methods.
Failing to subsidize them with

But worst of all. even if the! !««• ^ » Poor >ort of c,t,zen who

rtes, the people id the dtatrict to and vill.ffcatiou a. has appeared
be separated cannot vote io the, i«» the preas of aouthwest Jackson
county-seat election, for on the j c°unty.
Of course it is somewhat un
fortunate that over two-thirds of
Olustee property is owned by non-
residents, who won't do anything
to improve their holdings nor
contribute in any way to the up-
buildiug of the town. Perry &
Dowdeu were uot caring what be-
came of the town so long as ''they
got theirs," and they certainly
got it when they unloaded $47,000
of worthless lots on the bald
prairie to a lot of get-rich-quick
cracker-uecks "back east" who
thought they could set down on
their glutiuus maximus aud watch
the village grow through a spy-
glass without lifting a finger to
help it. Now Olustee wants thesej
same suckers to "come through"
with the dough to help wrest the
couuty seat away from Altus—
and they're not doing it—uot by
a long chalk! Poor old Olustee!
