Delegate Callahan has introduced
in the house a bill to authorize a
Vesuvvey of township J't in ' Wood-
ward county, Oklahoma. The
jeq^Mity for this piece of legislation
', urgent. All the papers ot former
..;ryeys have bten lo3t or destroyed,
iii l only by congressional action can
ho lines lie fixed.
MoJ^niley's wive qf prosperity is
low to materialize and the dissa'is-
.otion of the people was emphatio-
wly noticeable by Democratic gilnp
the recent eity elections of Ohio,
idiana Illinois and Wisconsin.
What this expression of disa'p-
roval portends jnsi at "resent is
•ily a matter of conjecture, but it.

War has broken out between

their subjects are on the side of

Nothing in the eloquent address
made by Mr. Bryan at the Jefferson
birthday banqueut, a gathering of
democrats that will not soon be for-
gotten, was more important o, sig-
nificant than the followiug words;
"The position taken by the Demo-
cratic party in 188(1 will not be sur-
rendered. If you doubt the perma-
nency of the Chicago platform as a
party creed, go among the rank and
file of the party and measure the zeal
and enthusiasm which that platform
has aroused, and you will realise the
impossibility of taking a backward
step. True the present administra-
tion is seeking to turn public atten-
tion to the tariff question, but if our
reasoning is well founded, an in-
crease of taxes cannot restore pros,
perity to to the producers of wealth.
In fact we contend that neither
high taxation nor low taxation can
bring prosperity to the people, so
long as an appreciating dollar con-
tinues to give the money owner an
advantage over the rest of the peo-
ple. The money question must he
tne paramount issue of the next Cain
paign, as it was of the last. If the
Dingley bill brings genuine an/I per-
manent prosperity, the democratic
party will not be in a posinion to
* in a contest Dby opposing it. If
or the other hand, the Dingley bill
proves a disappointment to those
who advocate it, our position ot
isoo will he slrengtheud, and p blic
attention will be riveted upon the
fact that the cause of financial de-
preciateon is to be found in our
monetary system.''
Senator Nelson, of Minn , al*
though a republican, is in »ympa«
thy with the efforts made by tie
democrats in the [louse to amend
the tariff bill by authorizing the
president to suspend t.|u collection
of duties .upon any iraponi* tri-iv!/,,

Democrats would be delighted to
see Mr. MuKinley's bluff, other* ise
known as the special diplomatic
commission to visit Europe with
power to negotiate with the gov
ernments of that section in behalf
of international bimetallism, sue-
ceed iu accomplishing something
tangible, but none of thera have the
slightest idea that it will. The Com-
missioners, Senator Wolcott, Gen.
Paine, of Mass., and Hon. Adlai E.
Stevenson, of 111., are capable men,
and their failure to accomplish an
impossibility will be no personal re-
flection on them.
Senator Morgan closed his speech
in favor of his resolution reoogniz-
the Cubans as belligerents by de-
claring that whatever action this
country might or might not take to-
wards Cuba, the freedom of the is-
land was written iti the stars.
Senator Chandler's bills fo>- '.he
seizure of the armor plant", of the
Hethlebein and Carnegie steel coin-
ranies by the govere-uent, represent
avery daDgerous sort of bluff, for
it is evident th"5y are nothing!else.
That these companies have been ex-
tortionate in their dealings with the
government is^true, but that doesn't
give congress any right to confis-
cate their property.
