Holy Spirit to apply the Word to his
life It cleunaef and keeps him from
the defilement of sin.
Complete Deliverance.
Then we come to the third fact,
ivhlch tells us how we may be deliv-
ered from the power of sin. "These
;hlngs write I unto you that ye may
not sin" (Revised Version 2:1). When
we face this truth we face one of the
most solemn truths In the Word of
T.od. We may hnve been afraid of 11
because we have known certain teach
•ng that has led Into grave error, and
«s a result we draw back when any-
one talks about the possibility of the
believer not sinning, but what Is the
significance of this expression "may
not sin," If It does not mean that
there is for the believer deliverance In
this life from the power of sin.
It Is very evident from the context,
that tM apostle Is not teaching the
eradication of sin when he says "may
not sin," for he says, "If we say we
have-art sin (that Is the root or prin-
ciple of sin) we deceive ourselves and
the truth Is not In ns." But In the
(ace of this fact that sin is in us, the
ipostle says "these things write I un-
to you that ye may not sin." By
this he means the practice of sin, and
so he thus sets before us. the possl^
Mlity < t the believer being delivered
from th^practice of sin. Well may we
isle, "Howl" The answer is, "through
Christ."
Our Advocate.
But what If we should sin, fs there
thy provision for us? Yes, says the
ipostle. "if any man sin we have an
idvocate with the Father, Jesus Christ
the righteous" (2:1). This Messed
provision Is made not that we may sin, j
out in case we do sin. Just as the life- .
joats are placed on the transatlantic j
liners not tliat they may go down, but
fofr Use In cn*e they do go down: and 1
to If we fall into sin, the apostle tells ;
as what to do In the words: "If we (
' ,'ocfess our sins, he Is faithful and j
luet to forgive its our alns nnd te|
! ;',ean*se us from all unrl^bteorusnesa"
(1 :P). Our part in the restoration into j
fellowship Is to confess our sin. re- '
i uembering that before God stand* our
Advocate who plendo ltf his presence j
jur case. The Ideal, however, for our ,
'Ives Is for os not to firsictlce sin. We ,
I ire altogether too ready to excuse our- j
selves on the ground of onr "sinfulness, 1
ind so we set a low standard for onr
: Uvea. God's M»til for us Is that we t
tin not. Have we made It our Ideal
