Former Chief Clerk, Who Is
atill Missing.
Oklahoma City, Okla.—That the al-
eged shortage in the accounts of W.
E. McBrine, former chief clerk in the
jffice of the state auditor, and who is
still missing, has already reached, to
ais personal knowledge, the sum' of
M9,000; that he believes a full investi-
gation will show a defalcation of be-
tween $25,000 and $40,000, and that
possibly McBrine is not the only per-
son involved, constitute a brief sum-
mary of startling disclosures made by
M. E. Trapp, of Guthrie, former state
luditor of Oklahoma.

That he will furnish every assist-
ance to citizens and officers of the
state in putting the "joints" out of
business and suppressing the "road
house" evil in Oklahoma City and
some of the larger cities of the state,
Is the statement made by Governor
Cruce. The executive has been crit-
icised in some quarters for stopping
prize fights while the prohibitory law
is being violated in almost every sec-
tion of the state. Up to the present,
time, "joints" have been common
places of resort in many of the cities
and towns of the state.
Governor Cruce said that he would
furnish commissions to as many men j
in the state as desired to assist in
putting the liquor traffic down and |
out and that he would lend all aid
possible through the state enforce-
ment officer. The governor's theory
is that if 500 men were commissioned
in each local community as deputies
the joint keepers would not know
whether they were selling liquor to a
citizen or an officer and hence thev
would not consider it safe to continue
in the business. The joint keepers
are able to get a few officers "spot-
ted" while they could not keep a sue
cessful lookout if a large number of
citizens carried commissions as dei>

In connection with their appoint-

three members of the board are of
very nearly the same age. Lon M.

of affairs and the capitol commission,
is 39 years old, and both E. B. Howard,
the secretary, and Eugene E. Morris,
the republican member, are 37 years

that each Is married and each has one
child, all of about the same age.
Since their appointment as merm

three as purchasing agents for the
state has come into prominence. This

in that it acts as a checkmate upon
