Father Hennepin Found Coal.
The earliest mention of coal in the
territory which afterward became the
United States is recorded in the jour-
nal of Father Louis Hennepin, u
Trench missionary, who in 107!* record-
ed the site of a "cole" mine In Illi-
nois river, near the present City of Ot-
tawa, Hennepin having passed through
that region ten years before.
