London.—Premier Lloyd George, in
j a luncheon .speech characterized the
I leasrue of nations meeting at Geneva
j as "one of the great events in the his-
i tory of the world.' '
j The premier expressed the belief
j that if there had been a league of
! nations in 1914 the world war would
j have been averted.
| The league, said Lloyd George, is
a considerable measure toward world
disarmament.
| "There can be no real peace be-
tween nations so long as there is com-
petition in armaments," said the
premier. "But at the same time n»
lions cannot risk disarmament until
every country is included. .
Washington.—Imports of sold fell
off more than $7,000,000 during the
first ten days of December as compar-
ed with the last ten days of Novem-
ber, while exports of gold increased
by over $9,000,000, according to a
statement issued by the federal re-
serve board.
The drop in the country's export to
Europe was responsible for the falling
off in gold imports, according to the
board officials, while heavy shipments
ol gold to the Orient for exchange
transactions accounted for the in-
crease in gold exports.
During the first ten days of Decem-
ber sold totaled $11,846,352, compared
with $19,'373,229 for the ten days end-
er November 30, while exports for the
first ten days of December amounted
to $11,508,442, against $2,259,711, for
the period in November. Impv-.ts from
Europe dropped off by about $7,000,000
while imports fiom South America de-
creased by about $400,000. Exports of
gold to the Orient Tor the first Hn days >
of December totaled $11,322,585, of i
which Japan took $11,006,385, compar- I
ed with the Orient's total of $2,021,200
