AMERICAN CENTRAL
f

day of Last Week
WORKING MANGUMWARD
Importance of a Trunk Line Con.
necting Canada With the
Gulf of Mexico. Gov-
$ crnment in Texas
„ Latt summer the Chamber of
Commerce received a proposition
from the American Central Rail-
road Company to build into and
through Mangum. The proposi-j
tion was that Mangum was to fur-1
niah them a right of way and a j
reasonable bonus. They wanted!
three years time in which to build.
The American Central is intended
tojbe a trunk line connecting the
Dominion of Canada with the Gulf
of'lMexico. Surveyors have been
at 'work north of us. Saturday of
last week, Col. Angel and F. P.
Reed, of theAmerical Central con-
struction company were in Man-
gum. Two surveying parties are
now at work. One is working
north from Olustee and the other is
working south from Texola.
Mangum is in need of a trunk
line. Jhe United States govern-
ment is spending millions of dollars
on Galveston. It see-v)s to be the
aim of the government to make
Galveston as it logically is, the
key to the protection of the Pana-
ma Canal. By so doing the ship-
ping point of America will be on
the Gulf instead of on the exposed
Atlantic. For these reasons a rail-
road to the Gulf will certainly be
a great system.
A he Panama Canal is nearing
completion. It will revolutionize
the transportation business of the
United States.
