Press dispatches from Washing-
ton under date of June 3rd state
that at the request of the interior
department the secretary of war has
instructed General Merriam, com-
manding the department of the Col-
orado, to employ as many of his
troops as may be necessary to main-
tain order 011 the Kiowa reservation
in Oklahoma. This action is based
011 a dispatch from Colonel Rand-
lett, in charge of the Kiowa and
Comanche agency, reporting that
at least 1,000 intruders had settled
in the Wichita mountains, which
are in the Kiowa lands soon to be
opened to settlement, and that they
claimed the right to do so under
United States mineral laws. Sec-
retary Hitchcock said today that
they had no rights whatever, and
that they would be promptly ejected.
Chickasha and Port Sill. The
fourth pasture contains something
over 20,000 acres and is located in
the northwest part of the reserva-
tion, southwest of Kiowa station
between Elk creek and North Fork
of Red river.
