To the Democratic Voters of Greer
County:
Out of Justice to Mrs. Mary L. Wat-
kins, who was a candidate before the
Primary of August 7st, we the un-
dersigned officers of the City of Man-
gum want to correct an erronious im-
pression which she feels was made
upon the voters by reason of a oertaln
circular which was distributed
throughout the voting precincts, ex-
cept at Mangum, on election day.
It appears that she had told the
voters that she had been working for
the city as deputy City Clerk on a sal-
ary of $25.00 per month and In sup-
port of this statement had exhibited
a statement signed by the City Man-
ager to the effect that this was true.
But on the day of election a circular
was distrlbuted'whereln It was stated
that her salary was $50.00 per month.
The facts are that Mrs. Watkins was
employed by the city on the first day
of September. 1915, at a salary of
$25.00 per month and such has been
her salary to the first of July, 1916.
In making up the estimate for the fis-
cal year, July 1st, 1916, the Commis-
sioners decided to ask the excise
board for an amount of money suffi-
cient to Increase the salary of the
deputy to $50.00 per month but this
was done without the knowledge of
Mrs. Watkins and the Commission did
not know whether or not this salary
would be Increased until the meeting
of the excise board which met and
passed upon the estimate AFTER the
election. This was allowed and the
deputy now receives $50.00 per month.
We make this statement In order that
It may be known that she has made no
misstatement of the matter to the
voters and because we feel that she
Is entitled to have the voters know
that her statements were true not-
withstanding the statement above re-
ferred to as having been circulated on
election day.
Respectfully submitted,
G. F. BORDEN,
Mayor,

Mangum is to be given the chance
to place herself on the Ozark Trail.
The road now runs from St. Lottls to
Oklahoma City and plans have been
completed for extending it westward
to'connect with the Santa Fe Trail in
New Mexico. Following the Azark
Trail convention at Springfield, Mo.,
in June, three routes were mapped
out by the committee with the inten
tlon of marking the route which Is In
the best condition in November.
We have been placed on one of the
Routes and the formal invitation to
Join In the worlT will be extended to
us by a committee from the Oklahoma
City Chamber of Commerce which
will be here on Wednesday, August
23d, at six o'clock. All the members
of the committee arr members of the

beep placed in full charge of the
westward extension plans.

A communication from Floyd Thomp-
son, who Is chairman of the commit

VWe» take it for granted thnt your
people know fully the advantages of
being on a transcontinental highway.
From the standpoint of money alone,
the cost of putting in the road Is re-
paid many times, but in the wide ac-
quaintanceship with people all over
the United States, the value of being
situated on the road can not be esti-
mated.
