NO MORE TICKET SCALPING IN
CHICAGO.
Illinois comes into line with New
Tork and Pennsylvania In vigorous
action against the ticket scalping
thieves and forgers, three having
boen sentenced on Saturday, In Chi-
cago, after a fortnight's trial, one of
whom, profiting by his experience,
pleaded guilty to a second Indictment,
while the trial of the others will
doubtless proceed to another convic-
tion. Chicago has long been a favor-
ite field for ticket speculation, and a'
blow against the nefarious practice
could nowhere have been landed more
effectively. The persistent and unit-
ed efforts of the leading railroads of
the country to exterminate the busi-
ness, which is simply one of petty lar-
ceny, robbing the poor and the wage
earners, are bringing most satisfac-
tory results.—From the Brooklyn

THACKERAY AND THE STEAK.
Great Writer Waxed Eloquent In D
scriptlon of the Dish.
This, from an article on Bohemian
life in Paris by Thackeray, is enough
to make a strict vegetarian bold up
bis hands in horror:
"After the soup, we had what I do
not hesitate to call the very best beef-
steak I ever ate in my life. As I write
about It now, a week after I hav
eaten It, the old, rich, sweet, piquant
Juicy taste comes smacking on my
lips again, and I feel something of the
piquant sensation I then had. I am
ashamed of the delight which the eat
lng of that piece of meat caused me
"G. and 1 quarreled about the soup,
but when we began on the steak we
looked at each other and loved each
other. We did not speak; our hearts
were too full for that. But we had
bite, laid down our forks, looked at
each other, and understood each other.
There were no two Individuals on this
wide earth, no two lovers billing in
the shade, no mother clasping her
baby to her heart, more extremely
happy than we.
"As you may fancy, we did not leave
a single morsel of the steak; but when
it was done we put bits of bread into
the silver dish and wistfully sopped
up the gravy. I suppose that I shall
never in this world taste anything so
good again."

PREVENTS SMALLPOX.
Alaba8tine will not cure smallpox
and other contagious diseases, once
they have fastened their deadly grip
upon their victims. It will do much,
however, toward preventing their
spread.
It is a well recognized fact that cer-
tain wall coatings do much to harbor
disease germs and propagate same;
that of all coverings wall paper is
the most likely to hold the gertns of
disease for months and years.
There are well authenticated cases
where smallpox, scarlet fever and other
germs have lain dormant for years,
and have attacked persons afterward
when the paper was removed.
Kalsomines stuck on tha wall with
decaying glua are not much better
than wall paper with lta rage table
paste.

Not Hard When You Know How.
"I was at Caribou last Saturday. The
day was fine. I took the sidewalk near
the Burleigh hotel and passed down
Sweden street. On this particular
sidewalk was a huge drift of snow as
high as the vine-covered fence. Pe-
destrians had made a narrow path
through it two feet deep. When I
had got about half way down this
"straight and narrow path," I met a
lady, young and handsome. As I did
not want to get into the snow up to
my watch pocket, I turned around to
go back.
"Wait a minute," said she. "I will
show you how to pass; put your arms
around my waist."
After hesitating a moment, I did so;
she then put her arms around me and
said, "Turn as you would in a waltz."
I obeyed, and'all too soon we had
conveniently passed each other.

When Kings Had Right Divine.
An Impressive story is told of Louis
XIV and hla cane. It is said that he
had promisad one of his courtiers,
Lauzun, the baton or stick of the
grand master of artillery, and then
refused to give it to him from some
caprice or dislike. Lauzun was en-
raged at the king's refusal, and,
breaking his sword before the king's
face, exclaimed: "I will no longer
serve a king who does not keep his
word." Louis XIV deliberately walked
to the window and threw out his cane,
then turning to Lauzun said: "I have
thrown out my cane. It shall not be
said that I have struck a gentleman."
